March Metness: Selection Sunday

It’s always a controversial process and there’s always going to be somebody who’s dissatisfied, but the March Metness selection committee has made its picks and seeded the entries. Now it’s time to unveil the brackets that will play out over these next three weekends until we have a champion.

The goal, as always, is to see what emerges as the Quintessential Mets Thing. What will persevere through the field of 64 to stand alone as 2007’s icon of Metsiana? What phrase, what item, what word or words will, come the finals on April 2, stand alone as that most Metsian of Metsian totems?

Enough talk. You’ve got office pools to get in on and brackets to fill out.

    What?
“Kiss Cam” “Captain Red Ass” and “The Hot Foot” got robbed.

  • Anonymous

“Called Strike Three”? That's just cruel. And yeah, Captain Red Ass got robbed.
Cindarella pick = Tomatoes in the Bullpen
And yes, this is definitely a better system than the BCS.

Laguardia is a tough 10 seed. It comes at you often, from overhead and without warning. Plus, there's no defense against it (besides the U.S. Open).

no grand slam single? or walk-off walk?
the committee is showing its blind spots.
glad to see serval zipper got a high seeding, though.

Ooh, grand slam single!! Yes!! RECOUNT!!!!!
And maybe airplane race too, and the WOR oranges, and “Bring Your Kids to See Our Kids.” Oh, and I prefer the Lone Ranger to Cow-Bell Man (or Cow Bell-Man, or however he decides to mangle it this season…)

    Grand Slam Single is there.

The problem, you see, is the lack of an actual printable bracket page.
    Until now.
I've taken the liberty of adding a playin game, and put the official NCAA disclaimer on the bottom, which has got to be the funniest thing I've seen all year, but gwon. Have at it.

(Email me if you want the original Excel code or the .pdf version)
I propose holding the Final Four at the First Annual Blogger Conference, for which I NOW HAVE GAME TICKETS WOOHOO! June 23, 7:10 p.m., sponsored by Sinex Nose Drops (in my case, anyway)

Trying that with an actual link:

I love “Baseball Like it Oughta Be”, our greatest marketing slogan. A direct hit on the 80s Cards contrasting their cheapy bunt single/SB/take 3rd on a groundout/sac fly offense to our clubers.
Maybe an NIT for those that didn't make the cut? Dugout disguises, HR curtain calls (didn't we like, invent them?), “Going, going, gone goodbye!”, Cooter's, Smithers, “Dick Young Sucks!”, 'You Gotta Have Heart', Spider-Man's wedding, the Tommie Agee seat, Kingman Fallout Zone, Chico Escuela, Doc's giant Nike billboard, “Lets Go Mets Go”…
I could go on, but I think I should gert some work done.

    AMEN!

I was misled by dmg. He sounded so authoritative that I just went along with him like a pathetic lemming,

  • Anonymous

Oh my God, I just noticed “Bleach”!! HAHAHAHA!!! Dude, you gotta add the firecrackers. You just have to.

  • Anonymous

Just one word to whoever's gonna bring up David Cone in this thread: Don't.
Let's not turn this into a mass debate about the times our heroes acted as the biggest jerks.

  • Anonymous

I think the committee did an excellent job all around. I still believe, however, that Parking Lot Carnival would have opened some eyes had they made it. It's a shame they got bounced from their conference tournament so early and their RPI and didn't merit an at-large bid.

Tossing off David Cone remarks, are we? Allegedly, I mean…

Wow. Not a single 1-seed survives.

  • Anonymous

“I've got to tip my enomous black top hat to Revised Yearbook,” said Home Run Apple after the thrilling overtime final. “I thought my unique combination of iconic New York imagery and shoddy construction perfect for Queens would carry the day, but Revised Yearbook just had too much experience.”
Revised Yearbook credited a strong heritage that began with five versions of itself in 1962, as well as a more recent burst of energy as a result of publishing in Spanish. “Estaremos detrás con la recapitulación feliz,” Revised Yearbook remarked.

    That's one magic 12-seed.

  • Anonymous

    nothing pathetic about you, laurie.
sorry to mislead; i read right over the magic regional 4-seed.
i was puzzled at the time, too. uncharacteristic of gp not to include it. duh, he did.

  • Anonymous

The Committee has done its usual brilliant work.
    My one special pleading:
Jose! Jose! Jose! Jose! plays in a tough conference and doesn't get its full deserved respect. I think a 5 seed is appropriate, especially given that the grand slam single is a 4. Perhaps the Committee will take note for future years.

  • Anonymous

Here's one for anyone at last year's home opener (though I saw one on TV a few years ago too). At least a bubble-team,anyway. Maybe next year:
    “Parking Lot Car Fire”

  • Anonymous

One theory has it that the committee might have been swayed by the juxtaposition of all those Joses alongside a 7-seed. But that's just one theory.

  • Anonymous

Serval Zipper deserves a place for sentimental, old-timey reasons.
But why did U-Haul fail to make it in? On longevity alone, it should get the nod.
    But I quibble…

  • Anonymous

And I'm not usually much of a follower, either. I'm impressed by your powers of persuasion!! ;-)

  • Anonymous

Doh! I humbly withdraw my pleading.

  • Anonymous

I really don't like having to pit Outta Here vs. Grand Slam Single. That's just cruel.
That said, only you could have come up with these, Greg. Well done.

    Dai-ry-lea! Dai-ry-lea! Dai-ry-lea!
Who did they draw in the first round? Oh, fuck.

That's funny. I was thinking about U-Haul too.

This committee…sometimes it's like trying to divine what the Kremlin was thinking.
