F.U. to Mets: Beat Brandon Webb

Dear Mets and Mike Pelfrey,

Wanna start converting some skeptics into believers? Beat the best pitcher in the National League tonight.

Your opponent, lifetime at Shea:

4 starts, 2 wins, 1 loss (a 2-1 affair in which Victor Zambrano went deep, throwing the game of his life), 29 innings pitched, 29 strikeouts, 5 walks, 18 hits, 1 earned run.

Brandon Webb's earned run average in those four Shea outings: 0.31

This year overall, Webb is 11-2, toting a 2.58 ERA and wielding a WHIP of barely more than 1.

Alou isn't available (the sun shifted imperceptibly this afternoon, requiring Moises to undergo an MRI). Chris Aguila is apparently up, Abraham Nuñez undeniably down. The Mets are riding 'round in a hole in the ground.

Want us to believe you're worth believing in tomorrow? Beat Brandon Webb or at least his team tonight.

Cordially,

F.U. in Flushing

F.U., of course, stands for Fired Up.

About 2 weeks ago I wrote a comment …I understand that what I related at that time was overtly pessimistic…I said I was turning away my head bc I couldnt bear to look…I dont mind them losing games…baseball inherently is about batting a ball for a hit 30% out of ten attempts; as a good average to work towards. So, we as fans understand ,even overstand, what loss is all about. This is not simpy about loss, but perception. It cannot be conceivable that professional players,(with a few unseemly exceptions), would not put out their 100% effort. The Mets do not appear at surface to not be striving hard, its just that their futility in acheiving any measure of consistency is just not there.
The laws of physics and motion decree that consistent, albeit small efforts, will create tremendous momentum and expansiveness… for example, a small girl weighing 60lbs. will be able to swing a large man of 300lbs, when that much heavier man is sitting on a swing set at a resting position, acheiving its maximum height allowable at our gravity…accomplished simply by applying whatever force she can muster, even if its just a few foot pounds of force applied… however, and this is the crux, it must be done at consistent intervals, performed skillfully at the same time and location…then inevitably this will acheive maximum results. This is called oscillation, and this application of hard science can be utilized in any situation. Perhaps the Mets need an on-staff Physicist? On a side note, and I have spoken of this before on this blog, I am trained in biomechanics,of with which I can say with authority, that the athletes on the Mets team apparently are not utilizing the basic fundamentals of the physics of proper form to their advantage, in fact it is working to their disadvantage. Interested?? Ask Me.

    F.U. Billy Wagner.
P.S. F.U. does NOT stand for Fired Up.

You should have specified that the bullpen had to hold the lead after Pelfrey beat them.

Anybody else cringe when Omar's example of on-field leadership was taking the field three days after a concussion?
My God was that a load of desperate bullshit. As far as I'm concerned he and Willie can help each other pack.

I don't want to say I called it, but I called it.
Pelfrey pitched a gem. What a shame. I was like “You go Willie!” when he left the kid in for the 9th. And then he pulled a Willie and brought in Wags. As gary said, “Like a punch to the solar plexus”.

    Beltran did WHAT?????

is it just me, or did anyone else not get any satisfaction from that win?

Carlos Beltran for President … Mike Pelfrey for Pope!

I'm with you. If there's such a thing as a deflating walkoff win on a home run, this was it.

    Jason
Based on the # of Mets involved in the walk-off “bunny hop” at home plate (was I the only one thinking that Beltran was gonna hurt himself jumping on the plate?), I think the team would agree…
There is no such thing as a bad win, but this one came pretty close…

I got more satisfaction out of seeing that walk-off win then I would've gotten had they lost the game. The season may well be a lost cause, the jury's still out on that.. But at least they didn't give in after Wagner gave it up in the 9th.. And that's all the encouragement I need right now. That and 8+ stellar innings from Big Pelf.. We all knew it was there, I'm glad that he knows it's there now too. One game at a time, maybe taking the series from the D'Backs tomorrow can get this team going right again. At least until their next West Coast trip.

    Hi Greg,
And I thought it stood for Fordham University (with you writing on my behalf).
    Go Rams!

Fordham Hockey stinks. Go New Paltz!

It's all my fault. I was at the game, and when the clock struck 9p in bottom the 7th (somewhere around there) I said to my girlfriend, “this game is cruisin! You know what that means: extras!”
    God dammit.
