Quick Work

Did I just watch a Met-Yankee game that lasted only 138 minutes? No wonder the Yankees lost. That's the fourth inning in the American League.

Oliver Perez may be demonstrative to the edge of flamboyant, but he doesn't screw around. Ollie proved the slightly more substantial 46 versus National League veteran Andy Pettitte. Pettitte was good. Perez was better. Endy was awesome. Smith and Wagner were tidy.

And that's basically all that happened. What, you expected more from a Subway Series showdown at Shea?

This is all I needed.

it may be silly for a grown-up to get as much undiluted pleasure out of a baseball team as i do (as we all do who come here) with the mets, but i don't care.* a game like tonight's after a week like this one, with the promise of more great baseball next week and the months to follow…well, my life is good.
thank you endy — don't know what was better the throw out of damon or the homer (ok, the homer, but not by much) — thank you ollie, thank you everyone in the lineup, and thank you joe smith and billy wags. was that not a most entertaining game we saw tonight?
*actually, i DO care, and having given this more than its fair share of consideration, i've decided that if anything, it's a blessing and a great thing to have an outlet like the mets on which to obsess and from which to derive joy, totally unrelated to the rest of your life. baseball and the mets are this wonderful tonic for what ails about the rest of life. end of prattle.

As the first subway series game I have ever attended, I found tonight's tidy, briskly-paced affair to be entirely satisfying. There was no wasted time or energy, the teams were evenly matched…and we were just better. From the moment Endy gunned down the ill-advised Johnny Damon at second to lead off the game, the Yankees never quite got comfortable in our house. Just what I needed.
    Let's go Mets (Yankees suck).
