Instead of kicking a ball into foul territory and failing to cover home plate, Scott Rice found a way to lose more efficiently by throwing a wild pitch.
John Buck got caught off second base when he inexplicably thought a lineout to the outfield was up the gap falling in, and got thrown out inexplicably trying to steal.
David Wright had a ball flop out of his mitt on a tag play on John Jay, giving the Cardinals an extra out, which they turned into a run-scoring single.
Wright struck out with Daniel Murphy on third with one out. The Mets didn’t score.
Apparently discomfited by Carlos Beltran coming into second standing instead of sliding, Murph heaved one past Ike Davis, giving the Cards a runner on second with one out instead of nobody on with two out. Yadier Molina, to the surprise of no sentient Mets fan, promptly rapped a single to right to give the Cards an insurance run.
The amazing thing? This sad parade of boneheaded mistakes and failures actually amounts to progress for this broken, pathetic team.
How many times must you put your hand on this particular hot stove? Find something else to do with your summer.
I can only laugh now, it requires too much to get angry. I’m becoming apathetic.
For some odd reason, I think this is good. Of course i’d rather a hot start like last year and then keep it going, unlike last year. BUT I think a strong finish this year will bode well for next year even IF (and i’m not ruling it out in May) we don’t make the playoffs. The players we are counting on for the long term (davis, duda, tejada, murph, turner, vladespin, gee, neise, wright, Harvey, parnell) all have the potential to turn this around, and that’s the main thing. I think they’ll gell and end really strong.
I hope you are right…but young Mets players, aside from Wright, have an odd habit of getting worse, not better over time.
If the Mets are going to suck, let it be so epic that it could force a change in ownership.

if it weren’t for harvey being in the rotation and my desire to see him succeed, i would be rooting for this team to lose every nite, and perhaps break some losing streak records.
it indeed seems like things will have to get MUCH WORSE before the franchise undergoes any kind of serious and meaningful shake-up.
What’s that? Ah — Playoffs? Don’t talk about — playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game! Another game.

Watching the Mets now is like channel surfing and coming across some god-awful Pirates game. The grass is green and the ballpark is nice, but the team looks like the walking dead. And the 1962 Mets Yearbook highlights: 2013 Version – dreadful to look at, makes you think Marv Throneberry and Hot Rod Kanehl are HOF ballplayers. Even Employee #5, the Great Wright Hope isn’t immune to the fumbleitis. Can’t wait until July when all the national baseball press converges on Flushing. Apathy. This team has made me so apathetic, that when Molina got his hit, I only shrugged my shoulders and said, “I expected that”
Saw Rice’s wild pitch, concluded that was the creative way to lose this game (combined with Buck’s Stevie Wonderesque baserunning and DWright forgetting something when slapping a tag on Jay), figured it was time to give the TV a rest. Good thing about day games today and tomorrow is that I won’t be able to watch them.
Somehow, last night’s loss, seemed easier to take. Maybe because I attribute it to a team trying too hard and falling apart in the process.
But Jason, “find something else to do with your summer”? – I mean, not following the Mets even casually will also mean a summer without you and Greg. Nobody wants that!
Boycott.
Burn tickets in effigy.
Fly an airplane near Shea II (when that silly exhibition game comes to town in July) with a banner that reads:
NO MORE LOUSY BASEBALL!!!
Even better, get a class-action lawsuit going to get the Mets into responsible receivership.

I was thinking of organizing protests last year for the AS Game Break to embarrass the Wilpons on national TV, but quite honestly, I’m too old and have too many health issues. Also, let’s face it—there are bigger things to protest.
I will contribute to any legitimate movement to dethrone the Wilpons and open up the records to expose the corruption that Bud Selig has had on MLB.

I know. I lived through that. I didn’t even know what “NFL playoffs” meant climbing aboard in 1970. I was very poor then. I couldn’t imagine ever burning a football ticket. Now, as a Football Giant season-ticket holder, I am grateful to the fans who made that sacrifice for me and forced the Mara Family to enter the modern era of pro football.

I don’t blame TC for what has been happening the past three seasons. I don’t even blame Sandy Alderson (surprise?). Nor do I even blame Bernie Madoff – and, believe or not – not the Wilpons as well.
And we can’t hold it against the players because the good ones that we got have only been supplemented by cast-offs and cast-offs can’t be blamed for not doing more than they are capable of. Again, won’t blame Sandy for having to acquire them.
So whom is to blame? His initials are so apropos – BS.
A few things I’d like to see. Valdespin in the lineup for the next 40 games. What does he have? Let’s find out already. I’d like to see Ike down to AAA for a month. Hot weather they’re having in LV. Get your stroke back, son. Turner every day. He’s hitting when he plays. Let’s see if he can sustain it. McHugh in the rotation (yeah, what’s the difference?).
Team is tighter than Sandy’s wallet – time to shake a few things up.
Take my word for it: It really doesn’t matter what these guys do. Now doesn’t matter. There’s no way to fix the problem without a vision, a culture of concern, a scouting system, money, and half a decade of waiting.
Small sample size, I know, but this team of Amazin’s is on course for over 100—ONE HUNDRED–defeats!! Our team is almost ten games under .500, even before the kids are outta school!!
It’s times like this that I am glad there’s local, independent league teams nearby: I can spend less money, and watch the game of baseball without nearly the same level of emotional investment…
