USF is 6-1

Being No. 2 in the nation (No. 1 by the judgment of impartial computers) was fun while it lasted, but my USF Bulls obviously don’t care for northern lights. While you were busy watching The Office or the season finale of Mad Men or Game Five from Cleveland (or perhaps not watching television at all), I was watching my alma mater’s short-lived national championship dream get sacked by a hard-charging Rutgers defense and run over by the remarkable Ray Rice in Piscataway on ESPN Thursday night. We lost 30-27. Maybe we can still win the Big East and grab a BCS berth. Maybe we’ll get another one of those muffler or pizza bowls. We won’t be topping Ohio State anytime soon.

For about an hour, an hour-and-a-half, I was extraordinarily bummed out. Then I remembered this whole thing was pretty new to me and I never expected to have the green and gold candle relit so brightly this autumn by a program that didn’t exist when I was going to school down there. It’s been exciting reconnecting to my USF roots, a thousand-plus miles and twenty-plus years removed. I’ll keep tabs on my team the rest of the way. Their season, unlike another I could mention, continues with honor.

If anybody cares, Flashback Friday will be up later today, and then Jason and I will be retiring our consecutive-days-posted streak at 213, having blogged daily between March 21 and October 19. We’ll be around throughout the offseason, just not every day.

It was a hard fought game, and it easily could have gone either way.

    HI Greg,
On those off-days, you guys will be missed. It's fun reading and replying to FAFIF on a daily basis. Like “Flashback Friday”, why not post a “best of” to keep the natives from getting restless?

    Rutgers: Quality team, quality people.

“Best Ofs” are always there on the left side, along with alternatives to get you thru those Faith and Fear-less nights and days. I, of course, will turn to hard drugs and hot stoves.
    Joel
Of course, in Northern California “hot stoves” are more likely gas burning fire places and a fine Chardonay. But %#&^%*& Merlot!!

    Hi Joel,
I just might consider packing it in altogether.

Thanks Greg – the same can be said about USF :)

I'm really sad that Joe Torre died, but I'm glad that ESPN has dedicated the entire day so far to celebrate his memory. A genius of his magnitude deserves nothing less. And taken from us far too soon. Wait, what? He's not actually dead? He just turned down a contract offer? Oh…oh…i see…wait, what was that again?
Sucks about the Bulls last night (USF '95), they're fun to watch. Could you imagine Leavitt managing the Mets? He makes someone like Bowa look like a quaalude addict, and someone like Randolph look absolutely dead. Also, our own DW was at the game last night. They interviewed him, and asked him about Torre and if he spoke with any of the Yankees yet! jeez….

What David Wright said from those sidelines, in so many words: I love Joe Torre. I love the Yankee players. I love Willie Randolph. I love authority.
What David Wright should have said: Erin, what the bleep do I care about Joe Torre? Let's Go Mets!
Better wall-to-wall coverage of the downfall of Joe than Joe on a parade float.

Yeah, I love him but his interviews are always nauseating. David, for F's sake, you're not running for office, you're not a free agent, and Arod has not yet abandoned his post across town.

For President in 2028: Vote the Wright/Leiter ticket!

    gotta love Big East refs.
they took a sip of Jim Jones Kool-Aid last night with the FG block returned for a TD that they called back…
then they possibly topped it tonite by guzzling that same Kool-Aid and blowing a fair catch in the UConn game that was run back for a TD.
    Pac-10 refs couldn't be worse than this/

    Yes they are.
