He overslept? Because he thought it was a 4 o'clock start local?
Oh Ramon, you do keep everybody loose.
Me, I'm theoretically in stitches because the Mets have passed the point of being a team I can truly stress over and are on the verge of being a team I have no choice but to laugh at. Or with. Whatever. It's all good. Or as good as it's going to get right now.
This is a silly, silly team. They lose three games by the exact the same score because they can't generate more than three runs total. Then they generate three runs in the first inning of the fourth game. Then they lose anyway.
And Ramon Castro overslept or didn't understand time zones.
Somebody hits a batter with the bases loaded and the game ends. Somebody on our side is safe on a rundown between home and third and we get almost nothing out of it. Somebody is sent into battle again and again despite two concussions despite a heartbeat in his head and finally he's definitively sat down. The other team has a runner run into a batted ball twice and they win those games. Finally, the backup catcher who doesn't play more than twice a week can't make it to the ballpark on time to catch a future Hall of Famer.
If it's not ha-ha funny, then ain't that peculiar?
The Mets are absurd. For all their ungoodness; for all their astounding lack of depth; for all the scoring they don't do when they pitch and all the pitching they don't do when they score; for all the name players that don't add up to what you could accurately call a team; for the seven of nine they somehow won before dropping four straight to the heretofore worse Padres; for their one rock of stellar performance who isn't shy about calling teammates out yet nailed the coffin of this trip shut by giving up a three-run homer to somebody who used to share a number with Mr. Met.
They are absurd. They're still working on lovable.
I'm glad I wasted six hours in San Diego this weekend with about 10,000 other Met fans. Could have gone to the zoo, could have gone to Sea World, the beach, La Jolla, anywhere. Instead I watched this mess exhibit all the signs of a bad, make that awful, team. At this point, all we need are some firecrackers or bleach and we have the Worst Team Money Can Buy Part 2. However, none of these guys seems to have the energy/creativity for anything like that.
Let's review the last two days of baseball against the one of the worst teams in baseball:
20 runners left on base. 20!
A completely clueless Jose Reyes at the plate Saturday and in field on Sunday.
An inept Carlos Beltran.
An awful bullpen.
A Pedro who, I hate to say, looks done (between him and the bullpen, I couldn't count the number of two strike counts that turned into hits today).
The only player who looked even somewhat decent was Carlos Delgado of all people. Who knew he could hit a triple?
Willie should have been told to stay behind in San Diego along with Omar.
Willie should have been to
I thought I was over losing with this team, but this loss, once again, surprised me in its ability to demoralize and piss me off. What ended as a promising ellipsis 5 days ago in San Francisco turned back into an ominous (or perhaps just onerous) question mark for Pedro. He did not have it today, evidently, although I think a number of his pitches with two strikes were pretty good and the Padres just hit 'em anyway. They sure looked like a team with a good approach at the plate. Remember when we were like that?
Isn't that just the Mets this season? Every day the seem like they just don't have it that day. Maybe Pedro doesn't have much of 'it' left. Maybe the 2008 Mets don't and it's only June. Somebody forgot to tell them need enough of it for 9 innings 162 times, in every time zone.
Sure hope this is a funny story to tell someday to the next generation of fans who can't imagine us sucking. Those'll be the days.
Its times such as these in which a personal Philosophy must be developed to endure..
“Lovable”? I could see that, in a weird, dark way.
But Marv Throneberry isn't walking through that door.
Honestly, beyond the possibility of injury (which is always a concern), I'm not that worried about Pedro. His stuff (velocity, break) looks amazing. But the command isn't there – everything's bleeding over the heart of the plate.
I would be a lot more concerned if it was the reverse.
And why is it that really bad teams seem to play the games of their lives when they play the Mets. For example, on Friday the Padres center fielder makes an amazing catch on Wright's potential bases clearing double; earlier in the year when we lost to the Nats at home, the Nats left fielder makes the play of his life to prevent the Mets from winning. I always thought that teams seem to get up more for the Mets than they do against any other team (including the Yankees). Unfortunately, the 2008 Mets just can't rise to the occassion.
Here's my personal philosophy: this team is fucked, gimme a beer…
“Mets have passed the point of being a team I can truly stress over and are on the verge of being a team I have no choice but to laugh at.”
'At a boy, Greg, the last time you gave up on them the Mets went on to win seven of nine. You're latest tirade is just the kick in the rear-end they again need!
As far as being funny, this is not nearly as enjoyable as1962. At this time 46 years ago the Mets were 14-37, 22-1/2 games behind and Marvelous Marv had been wearing the orange and blue for exactly one month. And they also didn't have anything resembling a Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, Castillo, Santana, Martinez and a Wagner….., although it does seems they're working on it!
The Wilpons are very lucky they have the farewell to Shea this year and new park hype for the year or two after that to spike attendance. Because this team is unlikely to go anywhere any time soon. The pitching is mediocre. The lineup aging and dismal: the few stars have no clear approach anymore and the rest of it is AAA-caliber.
I love Hojo, always have, but why does it seem like every other team takes what the pitcher gives 'em, goes the other way, occasionally gets clutch hits, while our guys are just hacking away trying to hit HRs?
Just wondering how much an impact this will have next year at Citfield if the poor play continues. While there is little doubt most games will be close to a sellout, the question remains how many seats will actually be occupied and left open on Stub-Hub.
Anybody else catch the camera shot of Jose, Jose, Jose picking his nose and then eating it in the dugout during yesterday's game . . . real nice . . . not only does he act like a 6 year old on the ball field, but also in the dugout
WHO died and made YOU king around here . . . I'm just stating facts . . . our idiot savant SS was indeed caught on camera picking his nose, inspecting his find and then ingesting it . . . and I have it on DVR for posterity . . . I'd post it to youtube but MLB would only get it taken down
If you're really a Met fan, a thousand pardons.
The tone of your post, though, sounded suspiciously like you were some “other” type of fan and were trolling.
Nosé? No se.
I am a 50 year old Mets fans who is sick and tired of being sick and tired of this team's erratic play, and I choose to make the childish SS my personal whipping boy because he is the most talented of all but yet the most erratic and frustrating and hence, in my view, the poster boy of this team's ills . . . and for him to be caught on camera picking his nose (which alone is forgivable for ballplayers, given the infield dirt and dust) but then caught on camera eating his booger is all too emblematic of Jose's childishness and lack of maturity . . . I am as convinced as ever that he will never be more than what he is now and will never blossom into a leader and elite ball-player to take us to the promised land.
Mets dont' care if they're on stub hub, cause they've already been paid. The whole Citi Field structure has been set up to rely less and less on fans.
I'm starting to think HoJo has to go. I was saying this to my father when he mentioned the idea of Carter as manager. I don't think I want any of these legacy coaches that I'd feel bad about firing if they don't get it done. A bench coach/first base coach is one thing, but the pitching/hitting coaches need to be better.
Castro overslept because he was up late saving the world from 1940's Nazis opening a rift to Hell.

the Mets are the same as they've always been. they have a “good year” and then regress to normal. a team of overpaid underachievers. down through the years this has been their pattern. they have some stars but one or two top players cannot carry a team of twenty five. 1969 and 1986 were two seasons that were completely out of the ordinary, and will not be repeated.
no matter what the owners promise, the Mets will never be a really successful team. there will be some flashes of brillance, then they'll revert to their usual disappointing standard of play. i speak as a mets follower of long standing. i begin to despair of ever again having the thrill of a season like that of 1986. i wonder how many years i have left to let down again and again.
oh, i thought it was because he was tired from saving princess fiona.
Good point about Pedro. And the Mets chronic mediocrity as a franchise. But I guess that's what the faith is about in the face of fear's creeping realization. You gotta believe, of course, but you don't want to set yourself up for profound chronic disappointment. That's just masochism. What a conundrum.
