The Place to Be

“Can you do something about the fish smell? It's not very appetizing.”

“Oh, I don't think it's that bad. They were only here for about ten days.”

“Ten days was ten days too many. And what's up with the AC? There's hot air coming out.”

“That? That's just some fumes. It's from a couple of weeks ago. Washington…you […]

Makes a Fellow Proud to be an Astro

Welcome to Flashback Friday: Tales From The Log, a final-season tribute to Shea Stadium as viewed primarily through the prism of what I have seen there for myself, namely 361 regular-season and 13 postseason games to date. The Log records the numbers. The Tales tell the stories.

Now That Was Ridiculous

The poorest player on the New York Mets makes nearly $400,000 a year to ply his trade, but have a moment's sympathy if you can: Right now they're on a bus, and that bus is going to Philadelphia.

But at least they have memories of an extra-inning marathon that went from taut to excruciating to taxing […]

Aw What the Hell, Let's Dance

Once upon a time the Mets changed the way Jose Reyes ran, afflicting him with a limping gait like a horse afraid of stepping in a hole. In theory it seemed like a good idea, a way to cure the chronic hamstring woes that threatened to derail an electric but raw career. In practice it […]

Many Happy Returns

The Comeback Player of the Year ballots were due early this year. Had to have 'em in, like taxes (or extensions), by April 15. Fortunately plenty of candidates nominated themselves Tuesday night — and just in time.

Here in no particular order are who and what I filled in on my ballot:

• Fun. Yes, fun. Unalloyed […]

Words We've Lost

“If they boo, that’s fine. That’s the history they’ve got from not being so good, I guess.”
—Johan Santana

“Who wants to be a Mets fan? There’s no future in it.”
—Miriam Chan

Last week’s New York Baseball Giants Nostalgia Society triannual meeting was graced by the presence of Frank Deford who was kind enough to come and chat […]

The Shea Countdown: 19-16

19: Friday, August 22 vs Astros

When telling the story of Shea Stadium, ladies and gentlemen, the chapter that drips the most magic from its pages is the one we know as 1969. No other ballpark has ever known a year like it.

There is much to remember 1969 by and it would probably take a full […]

I Had the Strangest Dream This Morning

Wow did I ever have a weird dream this morning.

I'd gone back to sleep for a little bit, but it was a couple of hours until game time, and that must have been weighing on my mind, because I dreamt a whole baseball game in my head. And not a good one.

You know how lots […]

The Shea Countdown: 22-20

22: Tuesday, August 19 vs Braves

While it is fairly common knowledge, ladies and gentlemen, that Shea Stadium has hosted many a megastar concert in its 45 years, those who are Mets fans above all else probably have a slightly different ear for the music they've heard at Shea, particularly since 1980 when our audio/video crew […]

A Game of Kvetch

There were gophers, there were weasels, there was one oversized gadfly…oh wait, that was me.

The final fifth game of a season in the history of Shea Stadium: from it I will remember almost nothing fondly. It was just one of those days, even if it was a Saturday, even if it was the home debut […]
