Now Leaving the Montage

And yet, it felt fantastical. I wasn’t entirely sure the road I walked was even there anymore. And even if it were there as the map said, and even if I went to walk it again on another day, another season, maybe in a different pair of shoes, it wouldn’t be the same road. I […]

A Good Nap Spoiled

I loved watching the great victory today, a shutout for our side, with New York coming through toward the end. I am referring, of course, to my annual viewing of 1776, a film I still find worth watching every Fourth of July, my custom since 1991 and something I hope to do as long as […]

Max Optimism

So far, the highlight of Max Scherzer’s career as a New York Met is he has agreed to a contract of $130 million over three years to be a New York Met. It won’t show up in the main statistical body of Scherzer’s Baseball-Reference entry, but it’s more than a lot of recent Mets have […]

Love in the City at Century’s End

Welcome to A Met for All Seasons, a series in which we consider a given Met who played in a given season and…well, we’ll see.

Not every man’s a talker, John.
—Howard Da Silva as Benjamin Franklin to William Daniels as John Adams, 1776

On August 13, 1997, Comedy Central debuted a new animated series called South Park. […]

A Welcome Unreality

This is just like that other year when the Mets were diddling around for almost four months, then got hot and catapulted themselves into a playoff chase already in progress. Do you remember that other year?

You don’t. Because this is a new one on us. You’d think after 58 years, we’d have seen it all, […]

Bored on the Fourth of July

It’s bad enough that Major League Baseball’s schedulemakers have left the Mets idle on this most iconic of summertime dates, but you’d figure they could have at least let them play on the eve of our nation’s 243rd birthday.

What’s that? The Mets did play on July 3? Yesterday? Wednesday? Funny, I have no recollection of […]

When ‘1776’ Met 2018

Good news: the Mets won in Toronto on the Fourth of July. Better news: my wife and I devoted part of our holiday to watching 1776 together for the twenty-eighth consecutive Independence Day, a tradition that dates back to 7/4/1991, coincidentally another of those infrequent occasions when our American baseball team […]

The Long March from December

We still reside on the shadowy side of the Baseball Equinox, that annually anticipated milestone on the calendar that sits precisely between the final pitch of the last Mets season and the first pitch of the next Mets season. This offseason’s midpoint won’t arrive until we have passed 89 days, 9 hours and 25 minutes […]

An Evening at the Improv

Met pinstripes are magical. Put any player in them and they perform wondrous feats. Players you’d all but forgotten about. Players you’d barely heard of before. Players on whose backs it would not occur to you to pursue a postseason berth. They’re all here, whoever they are, and they’re wearing Mets uniforms in the service […]

The Glorious Four

It doesn’t take a Richard Henry Lee galloping down to the House of Burgesses and back (stopping off in Stratford long enough to refresh the missus) to deliver a resolution that declares unequivoca-LEE that the four-game series the New York Mets just completed against the Chicago Cubs is and ought to be considered among the […]
