The Midday Flub of Ben Revere

Rules I can’t believe baseball maintains:

1) The bit about transferring the ball from the glove to the hand after the ball is effectively caught.

2) Allowing Matt Harvey to face mere mortals.

Both items worked to our advantage Sunday, so sure, we’ll take ’em. There’s really nothing illegal or immoral about pitching Harvey every fifth day, though […]

Giving Us Something We Can Feel

Each Matt Harvey start transports me to a better place — a better place than third, even if the Mets have been stuck there since well before he came up and will have to keep what’s left of their act together to remain there. (Hard-to-believe fact: the Mets, despite losing 20 of their last 28, […]

Mets Yearbook: 1983

Tonight at 7, prior to the pregame show, SNY takes us back to the bridge linking the fetid past with the promising future via Mets Yearbook: 1983. The campaign in question yielded the Mets’ seventh consecutive terrible record (68-94) but ended on a reasonably high note (31-29). More foretelling, the season marked the Met debuts […]

The Intersection of Cashen & Strawberry

In the spring of 1980, the New Yorker’s Roger Angell was making his incomparable annual rounds and alighted on St. Petersburg for a morning B-squad game between  Joe Torre’s Mets and their neighbors, Ken Boyer’s Cardinals. The rookie getting everybody’s attention that March was St. Louis’s big first baseman Leon Durham — “he is called […]

SCOTUS SEZ LGM!

[T]his appreciation for diverse views may also come in handy as a diehard Mets fan serving alongside her new colleague-to-be, Yankees fan Justice Sotomayor — who I believe has ordered a pinstripe robe for the occasion.
—President Barack Obama, May 10, 2010

Elena Kagan has been nominated to serve as the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court […]

The Hungry Years

Welcome to Flashback Friday: Tales From The Log, a final-season tribute to Shea Stadium as viewed primarily through the prism of what I have seen there for myself, namely 364 regular-season and 13 postseason games to date. The Log records the numbers. The Tales tell the stories.
