Right Place, Wrong Time

But when my pace is falling slack
I catch myself thinking back
A certain night, a certain summer
Long gone long
—The Rainmakers

I suggested to my buddy Jim we get together Friday night to watch the Mets game at this place in Rockville Centre in whose present incarnation I’d never set foot but in whose confines I’d seen plenty. […]

Casey & Dazzy to Davey & Rusty

On Saturday, the Mets will distribute 25,000 bobbleheaded likenesses of Daniel Joseph Staub, which is not the same thing as actual likenesses — the resemblance is primarily hair-deep — and may not be enough for the club to satisfy the honoree’s stated wish that “everyone comes out and gets one.” Nobody likes to imagine Customers […]

Mets Yearbook: 1985

Wednesday night at 7:00, SNY airs Mets Yearbook: 1985, the channel’s adaptation of the state-of-the-art ’85 highlight film No Surrender. I hope it’s nearly as spine-tingling in edited form as it was when it filled SportsChannel’s rain delays in 1986, particularly given that the original, from the heart of the MTV era, contained magnificent music […]

He Put the 8 in 1985

Welcome aboard, and thank you for joining our tour group. We know you could have chosen any Met season to get lost in for a little while, but we think you chose wisely in deciding to join us here in 1985. We’re not supposed to play favorites, but between you folks and me, this is […]

The Gem Before the Storm

Of course Chris Capuano pitched a great game Friday night. Mets starters always pitch great games when hurricanes are bearing down on New York.

Mind you, my sample size is now three, which is a good thing since although we all want more well-pitched Mets games, none of us wants any hurricanes. Seems to me you […]
