The Happiest Recap: 085-087

Welcome to The Happiest Recap, a solid gold slate of New York Mets games culled from every schedule the Mets have ever played en route to this, their fiftieth year in baseball. We’ve created a dream season that includes the “best” 85th game in any Mets season, the “best” 86th game in any Mets season, […]

Definitely Iffy, Definitely Izzy

“It’s just another ballpark to me,” Jason Isringhausen told reporters before he pitched for the first time at Citi Field. “But to put the ‘Mets’ across your chest, it’s pretty special.”

The destruction of the temple kind of took the edge off the symbolism in Izzy’s comma-confirming homecoming Monday night. It would be a lot more […]

Happy Izzyversary to Us

Today is the sixth anniversary of Faith and Fear in Flushing, and I’m touched that the Mets thought to get us Jason Isringhausen to mark the occasion. A 1995 Met is the perfect touch.

From the standpoint of FAFIF mythology, only Bill Pulsipher would have been more appropriate. Your co-bloggers’ first game together was June 17, […]

Five For FAFIF

Happy birthday to us!
Happy birthday to us!
Happy birthday dear FAFIF!
Happy birthday to us!

How old are we now? February 16, 2005 is our blue and orange-letter day, having begun this thing of ours precisely a half-decade ago today. Thus, as we blow out the candles, I’d like to share five reflections on five years of blogging […]

Breeding Familiarity

How can I be sure, the Rascals asked in 1967, in a world that’s constantly changing? I can be sure via the Mets. That’s their appeal. That’s baseball’s appeal. The constancy reassures. It resonates. It comforts. If the good old Mets can come through anew, maybe we’ll all pull through.

We welcome free agents and acquirees. […]

Fatal Attraction

When Glenn Close reprised her national anthem performance from the World Series on Saturday night, we all noticed the incongruity of the actress/singer showing up in her 1994 uniform top. I had what I thought was the obvious answer Sunday:

I’m assuming she was the singer at the Home Opener a dozen years ago and, true […]

Flashback Friday: 1995 (Part I)

The year was 1995. I was 32.

But after a while, who’s counting? Seriously, you get to a stage in life where you have to stop and think when you’re asked how old you are if you’re asked at all. For that matter, sometimes you’re not sure what year it is. One just blends into the […]

Flashback Friday: 1995 (The Exciting Conclusion)

This is the exciting conclusion of 1995. Part I appears in a previous post.

There was one week remaining in the season and I had a ticket for one more game. Actually, I had eight tickets. In ’93, I had the bright idea to lead the magazine on an outing to Shea. It went over so […]
