Faith and Fear in Flushing made its debut on Feb. 16, 2005, the brainchild of two longtime friends and lifelong Met fans.

Greg Prince discovered the Mets when he was 6, during the magical summer of 1969. He is a Long Island-based writer, editor and communications consultant. Contact him here.

Jason Fry is a Brooklyn writer whose first memories include his mom leaping up and down cheering for Rusty Staub. Check out his other writing here.

Early Innings

In a post to Twitter, Rick Coutinho of ESPN Radio says RHP Sean Green has modified his delivery, and his sidearm motion is even more pronounced than it was last year.

The Joy of Rex

Many thanks to the Jets for four very fun weeks, dating back to the postgame press conference after the Atlanta game when Rex Ryan sighed that the team had fallen from playoff contention. As we’d learn, his math was premature and his charges were off on a strange and wonderful journey that found them beating […]

The Legacy of Yadier Molina

The last man to touch a baseball in a postseason game at Shea Stadium turns out to have been Adam Wainwright’s catcher, Yadier Molina. That’s really too bad, but really quite appropriate. Molina, you might recall, set the stage one half-inning earlier for everything bad that has happened to these Mets since he caught Called […]

Tynes Didn't Look at Strike Three

Kudos to my friend Mark for putting the NFC championship into Met perspective for me:

I root for the Jets, but I’d have to imagine for a Giants fan, that was kind of like winning Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS.

Yeah, I thought, kind of. There was a definite twinge of life after death that followed […]

The Unwanted Legend of Game Seven

Oliver Perez is taking the ball against Detroit Wednesday, starting in consecutive games or going on 132 days’ rest, depending on how you choose to view this terribly overdue Mets-Tigers matchup. Either way, our boys will be lacing up spikes that are not — no matter how much elbow grease the clubhouse staff has put […]

Nuts

I read this phrase somewhere when I was a kid:

If ifs and buts were candies and nuts, then every day would be Christmas.

I’ve seen it worded slightly differently over the years but I’ve always identified with it. As you can’t be a Mets fan for very long without invoking “if” or “but,” it’s good advice.

Especially […]

Welcome, THB Class of 2006

Truly veteran readers of this blog may recall last year’s incarnation of this post, and so know that THB stands for “The Holy Books.” In which case your geek-proximity alarms just went off and you’re backing slowly away.

Everybody else, here’s a quick refresher: I have a pair of binders, dubbed The Holy Books by Greg, […]

One Month Down, A Lifetime to Go

I like to give Hozzie The Cat a little chest/belly rub when he allows it, which is infrequently. Tonight he did. As I crouched down to find his purr zone, I serenaded him with a quick and unoriginal chorus of Ha-ZEE! Ha-zee Ha-zee Ha-ZEEE! I was a little more off-key than usual when it occurred […]

As the Cardinals Celebrated

I’ll never know if she saw me. Probably not. But in that moment, all the bad memories, all the things I’d ever wanted to say to her, it all came flooding back.

My first impulse was to run over there, pound on her window and demand that she admit she tore down those posters and lied […]

And The Moon Rose Over An Open Field

Three hundred twenty-three regular-season games. Six National League Division Series games. Seven National League Championship Series games. Two exhibition games. One intrasquad game. Two games rained out after I sat down. One baseball card show.

I’ve been inside Shea Stadium quite a bit. But never was I as cold as I was Tuesday night. And never […]
