Ali Sanchez and the Audience Applauds

Sunday afternoon’s Met affair amounted to an absolutely aggravating abomination of a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the fucking Marlins, the victors’ most accurate appellation. How absolutely aggravating was this game that started at 12:05 PM, itself aggravating? Let me count some of the ways.

Mark Vientos should have scored in the first, but was […]

Catch a Catcher Cameo

True confession time: Your recapper earns no accolades for being an attentive student of the game Wednesday night, dozing off before the conclusion of Game 1 (“Did they lose?” I asked Emily when roused) and remaining groggy and befuddled for a good chunk of Game 2. Just as well, since I figure we don’t particularly […]

Don’t Designate Me, Bro

When the word “designated” enters the clubhouse conversation, ballplayers must get a little glum. If you’re told you’re a designated hitter, it means your glove is deemed superfluous. If you’re told you’re designated for assignment, it means the entirety of you is deemed superfluous. Until somebody declares different, the NL reverts to a DH-free zone […]

Welcome, THB Class of 2020!

So 2020 was a … strange year, on the baseball field and everywhere else. (You might have noticed.) A global pandemic forced a jury-rigged, stop-start 60-game baseball season, which the Mets proceeded to botch, passing up perhaps the easiest path to the playoffs ever available. Even beyond that, though, 2020 was what we now know […]

Over Before It Was Over

If it had been at all delightful, Tuesday’s twi-night doubleheader at Citi Field could have been billed a Berra’s Delight. Anybody who could make sense of the nonsense at hand would have been admitted free. Or admitted at all.

Nobody is admitted to baseball games in 2020, of course. After fourteen innings of futility, nobody who […]

The Sound of a Window Shutting

Perhaps I should put a SPOILER WARNING on this one, but I received a special media preview of the Mets’ 2020 highlights video, and it’s 23 minutes of Jeff McNeil screaming “FUCK!” after making an out and five minutes of Andres Gimenez smoothly fielding hard grounders.

And you know what? I’m strangely OK with it.

The Mets […]

Long Island...DUCK!

Monday wasn’t a good day for Mets pitchers hailing from Long Island. Long Island’s own Marcus Stroman (LIOMS), heretofore rehabbing his torn calf and presumed to be returning to the Mets’ disturbingly depleted rotation soon, announced in the afternoon he was opting out of 2020 due to his family’s COVID-19 concerns. Come nightfall, Long Island’s […]

Your Number or Your Name

Spring Training was welcomed heartily last Saturday to 31 Piazza Drive in Port St. Lucie and, perhaps because it’s only been televised back to New York thrice thus far, has yet to expend its novelty factor. At the intersection of Brinson (Lewis, one of those few visiting Marlins who doesn’t require an introduction) and Clover […]
