Call It A Hunch

I don’t usually make predictions, but I’ll go on record projecting Carlos Beltran will skewer Mets pitching for the next three or four days, and I’m only hedging on how many because I figure Monday afternoon following a Sunday night he might be rested.

He’s already having a bang-up season for the Cardinals, a year after […]

Your Newest Cardinal

Carlos Beltran is a Cardinal.

I say good for him. A player criminally unappreciated by the Mets’ stupider fans deserves a last go-round in a town that’s reflexively supportive of its players.

But isn’t it weird that Beltran’s a Cardinal? Because remember he took that called third strike that one time against the Cardinals? (If you haven’t […]

Carlos Beltran as Kevin Bass

In his career, he was — among other things — an Astro, a Giant and a Met. He stood in the batter’s box representing the last shred of doubt as to where a hard-earned National League flag would fly. If he succeeded, his team would know life and a possible world championship. If he didn’t, […]

The Happiest Recap: 158-159

Welcome to The Happiest Recap, a solid gold slate of New York Mets games culled from every schedule the Mets have ever played en route to this, their fiftieth year in baseball. We’ve created a dream season that includes the “best” 158th game in any Mets season, the “best” 159th game in any Mets season…and […]

Quest for Beltran

With his no-doubt, game-tying sixth-inning homer Sunday afternoon in Washington, Lucas Duda moved himself into serious contention for quite possibly, maybe, just maybe leading the 2011 Mets in home runs.

Duda is fourth on the team right now with nine. He’s one behind Jason Bay for third. Bay has ten, or two fewer than David Wright, […]

The Happiest Recap: 124-126

Welcome to The Happiest Recap, a solid gold slate of New York Mets games culled from every schedule the Mets have ever played en route to this, their fiftieth year in baseball. We’ve created a dream season that includes the “best” 124th game in any Mets season, the “best” 125th game in any Mets season, […]

Beautiful Team, Beautiful Player

After pitching the Mets to a complete game victory over Cincinnati, Mike Pelfrey told Kevin Burkhardt his team is focused on making the playoffs and then, if the matchups break right, eliminating Carlos Beltran and the San Francisco Giants. He said it with a straight face and I listened without laughing out loud.

Oh, the Mets […]

The Other Guys

Tonight’s lineup:

Jose Reyes – SS
Willie Harris – 2B
Daniel Murphy – 1B
David Wright – 3B
Angel Pagan – CF
Jason Bay – LF
Lucas Duda – RF
Ronny Paulino – C
Mike Pelfrey – RHP

No Carlos Beltran, as he is about to be gone for real, to San Francisco by all reports, in exchange for someone we hope will make us […]

And So We Came to the End

Nevertheless, we will tire of Carlos Beltran. Let me be the first to welcome him to Flushing and show him the door. Not for at least five years, I hope, but it’ll happen. He or his swing will slow down. The strange breezes and thunderous flight path to LaGuardia will get to him. He won’t […]

Last Train to Beltran

I haven’t enjoyed too many Citi Field nights more than I enjoyed Tuesday’s. You know you’re on the literal right track to a fine evening when your LIRR conductor announces that “for tonight only,” you won’t have to change at Jamaica for Woodside. All the dominoes fell favorably from there.

Stay on for Woodside and you…
