And You Don't Stop

One look at the dark clouds encroaching from the west led me to an unassailable conclusion, which I shared with my friend Joe as we sat waiting in the third row of Promenade, section 508, for the top of the ninth inning to commence Thursday afternoon.

“End times,” I declared mostly seriously, “are coming.”

Joe glanced up […]

Another Surreal Night in Panic City

OK, so …

Hmm.

Umm.

Seriously, how the hell do you start?

Wednesday night’s game was weird before it began, but we had No Idea.

Even before Will Venable headed for the plate to start the top of the first, Twitter was buzzing with rumors: The Mets were close to a deal, and it was for a bat — a […]

The Noah Kid in Town

They didn’t much hype The First Home Start In The New York Mets Career Of Noah Syndergaard, did they? Just as well. When they hype that sort of thing, it seems to implode. They hyped Matt Harvey’s Citi Field debut in 2012 and it was one of the worst outings he’s ever thrown. They hyped […]

One Fan, Twenty Losses

Y’know that saying about how you have to be a pretty good pitcher to lose 20 games? Well, if I can take the liberty of substituting that supposition with “supporter,” I think I’ve proven myself one of the better Mets fans of 2013.

I am Jerry Koosman, 1977.
I am Jack Fisher, 1965.
I am Tracy Stallard, 1964.
I […]

I Don't Believe What I Just Saw

I’m sure there have been worse showcases for baseball. I’m sure I’ve even seen a few of them. But it’s hard to think of any at the moment.

My God, that was a horrible, horrible, horrible baseball game inflicted on blameless fans and viewers by the Mets and the Brewers. I gave up trying to keep […]

Pocket-Sized Classic

Over the years I’ve had the honor — and the anxiety — of introducing a few people to their first baseball game. While I’m sincere in my belief that baseball is the highest art form yet to spring from the human mind, not all baseball games are created equal. For someone’s first three hours of […]

Our Immediate Prospects

I wish I could remember the young man’s name. I remember his age, 15. I met him last summer on an Amazin’ Tuesday at Two Boots. Big Mets fan, big fan of the blog, he said. Within a few minutes of introducing himself, he was excitedly explaining to me why the Mets would be in […]

I Believe the Children Are the Future ... Even When They're Not

Back in 2007, the Mets brought up a young man named Carlos Gomez. Gomez could burn — he and Jose Reyes used to race each other out to their positions, which I thought was adorable. He was just 21, but pretty big — the kind of guy you see as a doubles and triples hitter […]

Davis, Save Us

The Mets were meandering through their most arid major award season since 1993 — the last time no Met scored a single vote for MVP, Cy Young, Manager of the Year or Rookie of the Year nor nabbed a Silver Slugger or Gold Glove — when it appeared we’d have nothing more to sate our […]
