Playing Across to the Competition

After wrapping up their current series in Miami, the Mets re-enter the general baseball conversation for a little while, which has its upside and its down. The upside is everything the Mets do in their succeeding nine games against St. Louis, Atlanta and Washington potentially impacts the playoff picture. The down is that what appears […]

Acceptance

This time I saw it coming — a brutal regression to the mean in the second half of what had been a heartening season.

Funny thing is, it didn’t make any difference.

Once again I went to kick the football of postseason hopes, and once again the Mets pulled it out of the way, and once again […]

Almost Too Mets To Be True

Our pal Shannon Shark at Mets Police has an interesting theory that the Mets aren’t an organically occurring baseball team as much as they’re a serialized television drama that I’ve been writing since 1962, which is flattering of him to suggest, but I must reject the notion because I maintain the […]

That's What You Get When You Fall In Love

Games like these make you want to kiss the Mets logo smack between the “e” and the “t”…though maybe it would be more appropriate to kiss its “s,” considering it was Thursday’s tail end that made the whole thing so lovable.

There were enough isolated incidents across the 8½ innings that preceded this happiest of endings […]

Fireworks

So that was awesome.

An 11-1 pasting of the Phillies would be awesome any time.

An 11-1 pasting of the Phillies before a huge crowd is even more awesome.

An 11-1 pasting of the Phillies to finish the halfway point of the season on pace for 88 wins is more awesome still, particularly since the Phils are in […]

Too Soon for a June Swoon

“What is happiness? It’s a moment before you need more happiness.”
—Don Draper

The rockheads were at it again Wednesday night, and again it was the Mets who pulled more rocks than the Nationals, losing once more in frustrating fashion and falling a little further away from first place in the National League East, a perch nobody…nobody…envisioned […]

The Other Guys

The Mets, despite being admirable scratchers and clawers, needed a laugher. Or at least a chuckler. I no longer believe that winning builds character — it seems more likely to me that winning leads others to ascribe character to you — but you can convince me that eking out narrow victories and getting crushed by […]

And He's Not Off!

Seven scoreless from Jamie Moyer’s spiritual younger brother from another mother Miguel Batista…spectacular.

Daniel Murphy skipping a ball between Kirk Nieuwenhuis’s strides and through the shortstop hole Gary Cohen had detected a moment earlier…delicious.

Terry Collins ordering a squeeze bunt and Ronny Cedeño executing it to two-nothing perfection…wunderbar!

David Wright…superlatives implied.

So many marvelous morsels to chew on for […]

Keep the Customer Satisfied

Johan Santana knows from customer service. We ask the ace to pitch like an ace, his year away from acedom notwithstanding, and on Saturday he delivered like, well, an ace. Not Johan of the Twins nor Johan of the Trade (let alone Johan of His Finest Hour and several sublime Met moments before and after) […]

...And Sometimes Baseball Is Not Fun

The 2012 Mets have been recalled from Cooperstown.

It was a night of firsts. They lost their first game. They lost their first game that made you roll your eyes and mutter and swear and stalk around. They lost their first game in which they looked absolutely hopeless and star-crossed and fatally flawed.

All of which was […]
