Two Apples, Almost 700 Mets

She said she’d meet me in the bar
At the Plaza Hotel
Wear a jacket and a tie
‘What’s the occasion?’
She just smiled and she wouldn’t say why
—Long Island’s Own Billy Joel

“6:30 at apple?” landed like a fresh breeze in my inbox Monday evening, a few hours before the person who sent it appeared to all but permanently […]

From Min Back to Max

Last time we saw Max Scherzer he was decidedly min against the Yankees, chiefly because his slider was batting-practice quality, hanging obligingly in the strike zone and waiting to be clobbered by any Yankee who fancied a go.

Scherzer vowed stonily that he would fix the problem, which sounded good but also sounded like the kind […]

Next Victim — And It’s Not Us

In April, it didn’t merit our attention. In April, the Mets were the Mets who were going to make a habit of it. In April, the Mets beat the Padres one game, the A’s the next; the A’s one game, the Dodgers the next; and the Dodgers one game, the Giants the next. In April, […]

Every Which Way But Win

The starter can’t hold a four-run lead in the fourth inning.

Two relievers can’t maintain a tie in the sixth inning, and a third reliever is barred from the mound because of sticky hands in the seventh inning.

The center fielder can’t catch a ball lined essentially in front of his glove.

The five-hole hitter strikes out with […]

Mets Unplugged

After five days of electric baseball, the Mets once again look like someone pulled the plug out of the wall.

At least — and those are never good words to see up high in a recap — this time they didn’t look flat enough to slip under a door, the way they did in the opener […]

The Luck of the Unlucky

In the Mets’ first four seasons, the club twice lost home games by a score of 13-6. The first of them, on May 30, 1962, marked the coming out party for a chant you might hear enthusiastically when the Mets are coming on strong or ironically when the Mets pausing from going down meekly: “a […]

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

“Do you have any other ideas? It’s getting late.”
“Can’t we use the downtrodden team again?”
“Nah, a three-episode arc is enough. Besides, the idea that you’d need to eke out one-run wins in consecutive episodes, the second of them in extra innings while the ancestors of the downtrodden team that beat the ancestors of the visiting […]

You Again

Because it’s too early for more complex assessments, so far the Mets new season is a stark either-or: They’re either beating up on the Marlins or getting walloped by the Brewers.

Monday through Wednesday saw our gray-clad lads off under the roof in Wisconsin, where they spent two days looking gobsmacked while Bernie Brewer went down […]

It’s the Time of the Season

Baseball’s nothing without poetic license, whether or not Rob Manfred wishes to notarize said document. The Commissioner is intent on engineering a game built for speed. Get it over with already yet seemed the Manfred mandate for Opening Day. Start the pitch timer, throw the ball, quit yer lollygagging. It sounds reasonable in concept. It […]

Welcome, THB Class of 2022!

Spring is here … oh wait it totally isn’t, it’s cold and barren and horrible out there. But spring will be here soon enough, believe it or not. Which means we’d better welcome 2022’s matriculating Mets, now proud members of The Holy Books!

(Background: I have three binders, long ago dubbed The Holy Books by Greg, […]
