The Mets' Creative Impulse of 1991

This isn’t a piece on the Mets and Bernie Madoff, but as explained somewhere below, it was inspired by the current mishegas surrounding those unfortunately linked bedfellows. There is no literal tie between the 2011 mess and what it brought to mind — it’s just that something occurred to me in the wake of what’s […]

Home Is Where The Hall Is

“Thank you. This is really, really amazing. And it feels so good to be home.”

So said Doc Gooden Sunday as he was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame, and he couldn’t have been more correct — for him or for us.

On some level, Dwight Gooden’s been wandering the periphery of Metsdom […]

The Intersection of Cashen & Strawberry

In the spring of 1980, the New Yorker’s Roger Angell was making his incomparable annual rounds and alighted on St. Petersburg for a morning B-squad game between  Joe Torre’s Mets and their neighbors, Ken Boyer’s Cardinals. The rookie getting everybody’s attention that March was St. Louis’s big first baseman Leon Durham — “he is called […]

I Can Hear the Music Playin', I Can See the Banners Fly

Growing up
You don’t see the writing on the wall
Passing by
Moving straight ahead, you knew it all

I heard the theme from the terrible movie St. Elmo’s Fire a little while ago. I make it sound as if it was an accident, but it’s on a playlist of what I call, with characteristic understatement, The Top 500 […]

Raised Expectations & Lost Colonies

Aw, how can you get mad at these Mets for being, per coach Dennis Green, who we thought they were? We thought they were going to be not very good and now we are beginning to be proven fairly prescient.

It was a heckuva first half. There may be some heck left in the second half. […]

The Game to End All Games & 45 for 45

Winning in 20 innings by using 24 Mets who accumulated 9 hits despite batting against 2 Cardinal position players for the last 3 of those innings has generated some truly deep thinking among our readers, as evidenced by our unusually busy (for a Sunday) comments section and in-box. It’s great stuff, particularly the following, an […]

Our Immediate Prospects

I wish I could remember the young man’s name. I remember his age, 15. I met him last summer on an Amazin’ Tuesday at Two Boots. Big Mets fan, big fan of the blog, he said. Within a few minutes of introducing himself, he was excitedly explaining to me why the Mets would be in […]

Docoholics Anonymous

“I went to rehab. My friends embraced me when I got out. You relapse, it’s not like that. ‘Get away from me’ — that’s what it’s like.”
—Leo McGarry, “Bartlet for America,” The West Wing

Hello, my name is Greg, and I’m a Docoholic.

I’ve been hooked on Doc since 1984. It started when I was in college. […]

Favorites Never Wear Thin

It’s September 2009. The last thing I want to do is give the Mets more of my money. But there I am, at Citi Field, in the team store browsing, when I see a sign advising me that player number t-shirts are on SALE.

See, this is why I’ll never be an effective participant in a […]

Mets Get the Past Right

Four for four: the Mets went 4-for-4 today. They resumed baseball activities with a bang.

The long-rumored, long-postponed, long-hidden Mets Hall of Fame announced its class for 2010, its first class in eight years, and it’s a doozy. It’s so good I have this feeling I’m writing one of those “wouldn’t it be nice?” fictional blog […]
