Mets Get the Past Right

Four for four: the Mets went 4-for-4 today. They resumed baseball activities with a bang.

The long-rumored, long-postponed, long-hidden Mets Hall of Fame announced its class for 2010, its first class in eight years, and it’s a doozy. It’s so good I have this feeling I’m writing one of those “wouldn’t it be nice?” fictional blog […]

Davis, Save Us

The Mets were meandering through their most arid major award season since 1993 — the last time no Met scored a single vote for MVP, Cy Young, Manager of the Year or Rookie of the Year nor nabbed a Silver Slugger or Gold Glove — when it appeared we’d have nothing more to sate our […]

Dock Ellis to Doc Gooden

Welcome to Flashback Friday: I Saw The Decade End, a milestone-anniversary salute to the New York Mets of 1969, 1979, 1989 and 1999. Each week, we immerse ourselves in or at least touch upon something that transpired within the Metsian realm 40, 30, 20 or 10 years ago. Amazin’ or not, here it comes.

The last […]

Birthday Greetings, Bottle of Wine

Happy 64th to the greatest vintner in Mets history. He’s not shy about his ranking.

This was June 6, 1987, the day after Gooden returned from drug rehab to beat the Pirates and the day Seaver began his final attempt at pitching after injury and […]

Men Without Shame

Welcome to Flashback Friday, a weekly feature devoted to the 20th anniversary of the 1986 World Champion New York Mets.

Twenty years. Forty-three Fridays. This is one of them.

You know who wanted the Astros to beat the Mets in 1986? George Bush.

Both of them.

The elder Bush was the vice president at the time. His home away […]

Human

Welcome to Flashback Friday, a weekly feature devoted to the 20th anniversary of the 1986 World Champion New York Mets.

Twenty years, 43 Fridays. This is one of them.

Seventeen votes. Seventeen lousy votes. That’s what the most exciting pitcher in the history of baseball received in Hall of Fame balloting a couple of weeks ago.

Seventeen wins. […]
