The Neighbors

Good news yesterday, even with the rainout: I heard the neighbors aren’t throwing their annual October party this year. Actually, this is the second consecutive year they’re skipping it, making those affairs no longer annual events, I suppose. I didn’t think they were gonna have their party. I know they ordered in a bunch of […]

This Just Out

American League update:

Yankees.
Eliminated.
No playoffs.
Just like us.

Carry on, October.

Legends of the Fail

In the jungle, the mighty jungle of Comerica Park, the Tigers sweep tonight.

Feels good, doesn’t it? No matter how completely predictable this outcome had been for days; no matter the never comfortable fact that we’d rather be rooting for our team than rooting against their team; no matter that the phrase “putting them out of […]

Michigan Seems Like a Dream to Me Now

Joe Girardi just made another pitching change. He’s penciled in NOBODY to start for the Yankees on Saturday. But he’s probably not going to leave him in very long.

Thank you, Detroit Tigers. We may not have much these October nights, but we sure have you.

Happy Elimination Day, Metsopotamia and all the ships at sea. Enjoy […]

And I'm Feelin' Vlad All Over

I can’t believe they walked somebody to get to you.

Not The Yankees got the job done. Congratulations Texas Rangers for coming into your own. Congratulations to my favorite player who’s never been a Met, who — had free agency been more wisely deployed in the winter of 2004 — could have been a […]

Elimination Day Has Been Postponed

Mike Burke was president of New York’s American League entry in 1969. When its National League counterpart clinched its first division title, he sent this telegram to M. Donald Grant:

Congratulations on being number one. Am rooting for you to hang in there and take all the marbles. As a New Yorker I am ecstatic, as […]

My Kind of Fun

I’m a Wild Card waiting

In the middle of the deck

You’d better get a bigger gun

I’m not dead yet

—Ralph Covert and the Bad Examples

Your 2008 Mets: By no means dead yet.

That was the win the Wild Card-leading Mets needed Tuesday night. We need more of ’em, but that one was the prerequisite. We can’t take Advanced […]

Happy Elimination Day

Elimination Day has become so commercialized. I hope it never fully reaches the stage where it’s only about the sales and the long weekend (when it falls on a Monday night/Tuesday morning). Kids need to learn the true meaning of Elimination Day, why it needs to be held as sacred, why it brought such joy […]

Capping Off Holy Saturday

They advertise that you can’t script October. But don’t tell me we didn’t submit this treatment.

Would you have it any other way? Could you ask for a better 300-minute span, one in which the team we hate — along with its final abhorrent remnant of overblown aura and phony mystique — is destroyed and the […]

Good Going, Angels

Congratulations, Angels. I hope you enjoy your flight to Chicago. You done good.

Those chants directed at Alex Rodriguez? Turns out they’re…

GIDP! GIDP! GIDP!

And who’s not paying off the umpires? Since when is Joe West an exemplar of integrity? Way to go, Country Joe. Somewhere J.C. Martin is howling with delight.

Hold on, there’s a call…

“Hello? Bernie? […]
