Our Year Will Go On

My philosophy on first losses of seasons, particularly if they’re not first games of seasons, is they’re permissible to the point where they are almost welcome to occur. Get one out of the way so it can be recalled that when they transpire, our hearts will go […]

Worse By One Third

After Sean Green — who elicited the first visceral couch-to-TV reaction of 2010: “Get Sean Green the fuck off my team!” — gave up the laser shot home run to Dan Uggla in the seventh, building the Marlin lead to 6-1, I filed Tuesday night’s game in that one third you’re going to lose, per […]

Age-Old and Unanswerable Questions

If you had to choose, would you rather be hobbled by horrible starting pitching or terrible relief?

Too much bad starting pitching and the air is consistently out of the fan balloon by the third or fourth inning, leaving you grousing about wasted evenings and wondering if there isn’t something else you should be doing, possibly […]

Reality's Bite

And to think I began the afternoon worried about jinxing a no-hitter.

Ollie wasn’t making history Thursday, at least not the kind you want. For a couple of innings there, I thought maybe. When he had four consecutive K’s, I thought back to another April afternoon, a mere 39 years ago. Tom Seaver struck out ten […]

Wise to the Warning

Opening Day is wonderful. Your team plays, the fans cheer. If you lose, what the heck — it sure is nice to have baseball back. If you win, you feel like there’s no way you’ll ever see another loss. Look at that! Did you see what we did to those guys? 162-0, baby! This is […]

What It Means to Meet The Mets

Yesterday was the first game of the year in which the throw pillows on the couch lived up to their name. With that game-tying line drive intercepted just shy of the end zone (Georgia being SEC country), I threw a pillow clear across the living room.
With that, the 2007 season became real. The f-word that’s […]

All Good Things...

Last night, luxuriating in a 4-0 start, I debated noting that the Mets hadn’t trailed in an inning in 2007. I decided not to — as I wrote to my co-blogger, “Nah. We’ll point it out the first time it’s true.”
Today it was true — part of an unasked-for matching set that included 2007’s first […]

Careful What You Wish For

I spent yesterday fuming that there was no baseball, and I was not to be comforted by sensible talk that these days teams build insurance for Opening Day into the schedule. Insurance, feh: After 180-odd off-days, it seemed cruel to the point of criminality to instantly hit us with another one. And then this morning […]
