1997 Without Tears

I’m still working on Flashback Friday as regards the final game of the season ten years ago, but I thought it would be interesting in the interim to provide some emotion-free context for 1997.

Twenty-four men became New York Mets for the first time in 1997. Four of them — John Olerud, Rick Reed, Todd Pratt […]

Back in the Bad Old Days

If it’s the final Friday of the month, then it’s the ninth installment of the special Top 10 Songs of All-Time edition of Flashback Friday at Faith and Fear in Flushing.

In the late summer of 1974, the foundering Mets decided to give anybody and everybody a try. Their first-time callups that August and September included […]

A Quiet Met's Quiet Departure

If five years suddenly feels a lot more like a half-decade, then it’s Flashback Friday at Faith and Fear in Flushing.

It was a simple plan. In the bottom of the sixth, I was going to stand up when the leadoff batter came to the plate. I was going to clap. Applaud, really applaud. It would […]

Terry and the Pirates (and then some)

If you figured this one was coming eventually, then it’s the Flashback Friday you’ve been dreading at Faith and Fear in Flushing.

Usually I get to sneak these commemorations in on the sly. Goodness knows I’ve had an exclusive on the tenth anniversary of 1997. Nobody scooped me on my 1977 Newsday route, Joe Torre’s 1967 […]

Long Shot

When their season began, they were nobody. When it ended, they were somebody. If it’s the first Friday of the month, then we’re remembering them in this special 1997 edition of Flashback Friday at Faith and Fear in Flushing.

Ten years, seven Fridays. This is one of them.

My beloved 1997 season, the one few besides […]

Everything You Hoped It'd Be

If it’s the final Friday of the month, then it’s the eighth installment of the special Top 10 Songs of All-Time edition of Flashback Friday at Faith and Fear in Flushing.

Toward the end of the 1995 season, I found myself unusually enchanted by the Mets. It could have been their smiles, their personalities, their promise.

Or […]

Where in the World was Tom Seaver?

If you still haven’t quite gotten all the bubble gum dust off your fingers, then it’s Flashback Friday at Faith and Fear in Flushing.

I stopped collecting baseball cards a long time ago. But I never stopped accumulating them.

That’s what I have, an accumulation. They have gathered. They have piled up. They have snaked their way […]

Patience Proves Terrific

It took ’til the end of summer, but I got a Seaver in 1972. I was so proud that I apparently tacked it to my bulletin board with at least five different pushpins.

Every FAN Needs Its Rose

If you can remember when there were first times and when there were long times, but when there was no first time/long time, then it’s Flashback Friday at Faith and Fear in Flushing.

Twenty years ago this month Dick Young died. I know — easy applause line. Go ahead: give his demise a hand if you […]

For The Good Times

It’s been theorized in our darker hours that the Mets used up every bit of karmic energy in their reserves to pull out the 1986 World Series and once Buckner became Buckner, that was it, no more titles for us.

Has it occurred to anybody that maybe we’re subject to the WFAN Curse?

When the Mets were last […]
