Harvey's Version

My dad’s one of those people who scans the Paid Death Notices in the Times to see if anybody he knows has recently become somebody he knew. He was surprised to discover his cousin Harvey was among the listings two Sundays ago. He died at 81 on January 4…or to put it in terms Harvey […]

Warmth in Two Parts

An event and an image, each presented in the name of warmth…

Event: The Mets’ annual “Warm Up” Holiday Coat Drive, Wednesday, December 14, between 9 AM and 5 PM. Bring one or more coats to Citi Field’s Seaver entrance and receive a voucher redeemable for two tickets to a select April 2012 game and a […]

Two, Maybe Three Different Sports

The baseball game I watched last night in which Derek Holland thoroughly shut down the St. Louis Cardinals’ offense bore little resemblance to the baseball game I watched 24 hours earlier in which Albert Pujols filleted the Texas Rangers’ pitching staff. Holland stood head and shoulders above his competition the same as Pujols did, yet […]

Parnell as Closer: No Bull

Your USF Bulls had just seen their hard-earned lead trimmed to three points in the final minute of the fourth quarter when Notre Dame attempted an onside kick. It was still a longshot, but if they recovered, then the Irish would have the ball around their own 45 and if everything were to go spookily […]

Heaven Must Wait

The first time the New York Jets broke my heart was on a frigid Sunday in Cleveland, December 10, 1978. I was going to be making my high school acting debut five nights later in a production of Heaven Can Wait, as the minor character Inspector Williams, and as close to curtain as we were, the […]

No. 90, Defensive End, for the New York Mets...

Now that he’s signed and assuming he’s sound, Chris Young will become the first Young — not counting former Cy Youngs — to tip his cap to applause at a Mets Home Opener since Anthony Young did so eighteen years ago. We were all younger then, but the defining characteristic of AY’s career was middle-aged.

Young […]

The Things You Can Do Something About

Saturday I woke up with two overriding concerns: sports and the weather. Would the Jets beat the Colts, and was it gonna snow? Only the Jets and the Colts could determine the outcome of that AFC Wild Card game. Nobody could do a damn thing about the weather.

That always amazes me. We have all this […]

The Best Available Athletes

In case you haven’t turned on ESPN in the last week, the NFL Draft is in progress. It began Thursday night and it runs through late June. Makes for captivating theater, as in you’d have to hold me captive to get me to sit inside Radio City Music Hall for all 481 rounds of it.

Correction: […]

The Suffocating Insecurities of Mike Francesa

Pity Mike Francesa. He’s a very insecure man. Today he interviewed James Hirsch, the author of the wonderful Willie Mays: The Life, The Legend, and turned the conversation as well as the remainder of his show into a referendum (with his vote the only one that counts) on Mickey Mantle being better or more clutch […]

To Suffer Mets Gladly

I have lost and I have won, losing isn’t any fun. Rain is fine, but when it’s done — sun is better.
—Edward Kleban, “Better,” A Class Act

The Saints were coming, I read Sunday morning. A couple of days later, the Saints are still going, while the Mets will be here soon enough. Excellent news on […]
