Couples Therapy Breakthrough?

“All right, I’m glad you both came. I’m glad you’ve both committed to the process. The sign of a healthy relationship is when the people in the relationship acknowledge that its health is not a given and that you have to work consistently at improving it. Emmett, I’m picking up from your body language a […]

Maybe the Last Time (I Don’t Know)

A sense of finality hovered over the Mets on Tuesday night. Last series of the proving-ground stretch versus the Dodgers and Giants, a span in which they’ve mostly proven they are almost if not quite completely done contending. Last serious shot, with 38 games to go from a distance of 6½ out of first, to […]

Speaking of Spurts

Perhaps you’ve read of the unique public perception of Howard Cosell at the peak of his fame. He was simultaneously the most popular sports broadcaster of his time and the most unpopular. People loved him. People hated him. People listened when he spoke.

I thought of Mets PA announcer Colin Cosell’s grandfather as I watched Javy […]

So You Wanted Baseball Back

The first game after the All-Star Break is supposed to feel like a warm bath.

Oh that’s better, you think as you sink back into the routine of having something to do a little after 7 or 4 or 8 or sometimes even 1 in the afternoon on the weekends. At first that little break was […]

When the Gut Rules the Mind

What a way to get a game going!
A two run homer from Lindor!!
A three-run homer from Conforto!!!
In the first inning!!!!
The first-place Mets are ahead of the last-place Pirates, 5-0!!!!!

Which is where a Mets fan of tenure turned from dispensing exclamation points to issuing question marks. The way this Mets fan of tenure saw it, there […]

Dave Roberts Calling

“Hello, may I speak to Luis Rojas please?”
“This is Luis.”
“Luis, my name is Dave Roberts, manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers.”
“Hi, Dave. No need to be so formal. I know who you are.”
“I wasn’t sure, seeing as how our teams have never played one another while we’ve each been in our present positions.”
“Dave, I was […]

Seventh Time’s a Seventh Charm?

One half of a season is behind the New York Mets and so is the rest of the National League East. You can’t ask for a much better situation following 81 games. The chips don’t settle that way very often.

The Mets have finished the statistical first half in first place six times previously. They’ve won […]

A Day to Fly the Colors

By definition, a Sunday afternoon spent beating a pair of American League All-Stars en route to winning by five is time well spent.

That’s what the Mets did on July 4, racking up four runs in 3 1/3 innings off All-Star Gerrit Cole, whose situations were as sticky as his grip might no longer be, and […]

Shifts in Thinking

The Mets were supposed to be off Monday night, but instead they wound up in D.C., playing another one of their COVID makeup dates. Jerad Eickhoff was ambushed by the crazed baseball-destroying cyborg formerly known as Kyle Schwarber and the Mets continued to espouse their philosophy of nonviolence at the plate and before you knew […]

Your Seaver or Your Life

Perhaps you’ve heard or at least heard of the classic Jack Benny bit in which the comic entertainer who cultivated a notorious tightwad persona is held up at gunpoint. The robber makes clear he wants Benny’s wallet, and he wants it now.

“Your money or your life.”

There’s a pause.

The pause extends.

The pause simply will not end.

The […]
