Infinitely Polar Bear

This starts as a story of incrementalism in action, or the inaction of incrementalism, and how what had been the case practically forever was suddenly no longer the case at all. To appreciate how spectacular the eventual great leap forward in question was, we shall travel back, as we so often have in 2019, to […]

Round and Round

Oh, those beautiful round numbers coming out of the most roundly spelled state in the union, O-H-I-O…

10 wins for the preeminent pitcher in the league.
50 homers for the most prodigious slugger in the world.
80 wins for the team that still allows us to dream.

Three-and-a-half out of where we wanna be with nine to play. That’s […]

Home Runs Will Save Us

There was a clinching at Citi Field on Monday night. Nothing involving a Wild Card, except for the Mets assuring themselves at least one more evening keeping time at the pennant race party. Nothing definitive for the previously surging Diamondbacks, either, except for confirming our suspicions that Wilmer Flores would make us remember him at […]

Parts Fulfilling, Sum Inadequate

Pete Alonso’s team record-setting 42nd home run.
Wilson Ramos’s 20th consecutive game with a base hit.
Chris Mazza’s stirrups and how he gets them.

Weave those three uplifting elements into a broader story about a hypothetical magnificent Mets win achieved amid a sizzling Mets playoff chase and you’ve got some late-August iconography for the ages. Isolate them from […]

Another 41 on Seaver Way

It’s too late for massive regret where Saturday night’s sloppiness is concerned. It’s Sunday morning, and another game is directly in front of us. It’s too early for despair where 2019 is concerned. Thirty-three games remain, and despite an ugly 9-5 loss facilitated by the Braves playing admirable heads-up baseball and the Mets playing abysmal […]

The Downside of Prophecy

When the Mets finish up with the Cardinals they will play their next 19 games against the Braves, Cubs, Phillies and Yankees, bringing them to the All-Star break. Those four clubs have a collective winning percentage of .572. You never know in baseball, but those 19 games may provide a decisive verdict about who, exactly, […]

The Pace of Pete

When you play in a bandbox, strike up the band nice and loud. The Mets hit only one home run on Tuesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium and lost by seven. The Mets hit three home runs on Tuesday night in the same selectively diminutive venue — brothers […]

The Imperfect Hosts

“Did you get everything we need for the party? I don’t think these painfully bland t-shirts we promised are going to excite anybody.”
“Let’s see…I got two new players: Aaron Altherr and Hector Santiago.”
“More like used players, no?”
“Nah, they’re good as new. They work fine.”
“Uh-huh.”
“I also ordered a couple more — […]

Just Call It Peteco Park

Pete Alonso was National League Rookie of the Month for April and National League Rookie of the Night on Tuesday. He is a veteran in kid’s clothing any time you hear him speak. He is a franchise player exploding all around us.

Quality Stops

The 25-minute sogginess delay at the outset. The third starting catcher in three starts. The unfamiliar opponent from the uninvited league. The ballpark and broadcast advertisements for a namesake casino that misidentifies his number. The odds that it had to happen eventually. The species of which every […]
