‘Hi Howie! First Time, Long Time...’

I have so much to tell you. I don’t know where to start.
—Masha to Jerry Langford, The King Of Comedy

He’s just some fan. What do you expect?
—Alison the surly fact checker, Almost Famous

So many games like Tuesday night’s. So many road trips like the one that has wound winless from Miami to Washington. So many […]

Let's Spend The Night With Howie

LB looks better surrounded by and not submerged in water.

It was anything but a dark and stormy night the last time I was in my hometown of Long Beach, a place I’ve seen a lot of the last couple of days on TV as it’s become a body of water instead of merely […]

A Little Fun

It’s not a lot of fun listening to Brandon Morrow and a bunch of Blue Jays you mostly know from fantasy teams throttle an undermanned Mets squad in another country. The final score was only 2-0, but given a punchless Mets lineup with too many dudes looking up at the Mendoza Line and David Wright […]

R.A. Dickey Rides Shotgun

As I’ve grown older, I’ve had to be less doctrinaire about 1:10 and 7:10 and where in the pecking order of life “WATCH METS” fits. There are business trips, social events, the duties of fatherhood — a whole welter of things that sometimes come between me and the game.

But most of the time, I can […]

Our Shared Language (Besides 'Rats!')

We can all agree Niese didn’t have it and the Mets did little against Happ and missing the Astros is something that sounds good in theory, but at this moment they can’t move to the American League soon enough for our tastes. The Mets, a pretty good club in April, started May by losing again […]

Rescue From Radio Nowhere

Monday night I did something I’m certain I hadn’t done since the twilight of Fran Healy. I turned down the sound on a Mets-generated telecast so I could listen to the game on radio. GKR heresy, I know, but I gave Gary, Keith & Ron part of the exhibition season opener off so I could […]

Gary Cohen Is On the Radio

With apologies to the late Warren Zevon:

Hurry home early, hurry on home
The Rays and the Rangers, and you’ll hear Gary Cohen

Fortunately, you don’t have to hurry home. At 2 o’clock Eastern, just flick on ESPN Radio (1050 AM in New York) wherever you happen to be. Or go to espnradio.com. Fire up the appropriate app. Hitch a […]

Oh, Let's Call It Karma

A sometimes irritating, sometimes amusing side effect of chronicling games as a blogger is the weird double vision you develop as events take their course. By the middle innings you find yourself wondering what your theme is — or wondering if this is one of those ho-hum games where you’re going to have to invent […]

Junior's Mystique

With the seventh pick in the first round of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft, the New York Mets selected…some kid.

I wish him well. I wish to see him on the Mets before too long. Until then, Matt Harvey — RHP, UNC — is just a name to me, no more guaranteed of success than […]

Rites of Passage

Welcome to Flashback Friday: I Saw The Decade End, a milestone-anniversary salute to the New York Mets of 1969, 1979, 1989 and 1999. Each week, we immerse ourselves in or at least touch upon something that transpired within the Metsian realm 40, 30, 20 or 10 years ago. Amazin’ or not, here it comes.

They checked […]
