Right Place, Wrong Time

But when my pace is falling slack
I catch myself thinking back
A certain night, a certain summer
Long gone long
—The Rainmakers

I suggested to my buddy Jim we get together Friday night to watch the Mets game at this place in Rockville Centre in whose present incarnation I’d never set foot but in whose confines I’d seen plenty. […]

That's What You Get When You Fall In Love

Games like these make you want to kiss the Mets logo smack between the “e” and the “t”…though maybe it would be more appropriate to kiss its “s,” considering it was Thursday’s tail end that made the whole thing so lovable.

There were enough isolated incidents across the 8½ innings that preceded this happiest of endings […]

Walking The Talk But Only One Yankee

To dig up a phrase a very mellow college buddy of mine liked to roll out six or seven times per conversation, Frank Francisco is a trip. I don’t think I’ve thought that about any of our modern-era closers. All my thoughts on our modern-era closers were laced with expletives rarely deleted.

Not that I don’t […]

Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down

“Losing to the Yankees is no different than losing to Colorado. What stings is losing to the Marlins. They’re in our division.”
—Mets first baseman Ike Davis, June 21, 2012

“I can’t wait to strike out those chickens. I want to strike out the side against them. I’ve done it before.”
—Mets closer Frank Francisco, June 22, 2012

“What […]

Somebody's Perfect (Just About)

Did the Citi Field scoreboard start every Oriole batter’s count at 0 balls and 2 strikes Monday night? You know, just to save time?

I’ve seen hitters obviously overmatched by pitchers. I’ve seen hitters who it could be assumed had little chance against dominant pitchers in ungodly grooves. I’ve seen hitters who had to know it […]

Too Soon for a June Swoon

“What is happiness? It’s a moment before you need more happiness.”
—Don Draper

The rockheads were at it again Wednesday night, and again it was the Mets who pulled more rocks than the Nationals, losing once more in frustrating fashion and falling a little further away from first place in the National League East, a perch nobody…nobody…envisioned […]

The Other Guys

The Mets, despite being admirable scratchers and clawers, needed a laugher. Or at least a chuckler. I no longer believe that winning builds character — it seems more likely to me that winning leads others to ascribe character to you — but you can convince me that eking out narrow victories and getting crushed by […]

The Wreck of the Jeremy Hefner

In light of the dreary weather through which all concerned were compelled to muck Thursday night, the New York Mets have announced tickets from their 11-5 loss to the San Diego Padres can be redeemed for complimentary admission to tonight’s game.

But only if you’ve been bad.

Your conscience would have to wracked by a gaggle of […]

From Sacred Cow to Likely Bison

Ike Davis is neither here nor there right now, which is a shame for Ike and a shame for the Mets. He’s not here in the sense of looking like he’s a part of a team when it’s having its ups, as it did Tuesday night behind R.A. Dickey’s 11 dancing strikeouts, and it’s become […]

Welcome to the Broom Town

Sweeping the Phillies in Philadelphia sure is fun, isn’t it? Sweeping anybody anywhere is a fine half-week’s work, but taking it to this bunch — the portion of it presently standing, at any rate — in that place?

Sublime!

The Phillies aren’t quite what they’ve been in the era encompassing August 2007 and everything after. That, of […]
