Tell Me Something Good

Johan Santana is throwing from flat ground in St. Lucie and hopes to be ready for Opening Day. Adam Rubin has the story here, MetsBlog offers SNY video here.

Even with too many other signs pointing downward, and even as there are “no assurances” that the ace of the staff will be ready to face the […]

The Happiest Recap: 160-161

Welcome to The Happiest Recap, a solid gold slate of New York Mets games culled from every schedule the Mets have ever played en route to this, their fiftieth year in baseball. We’ve created a dream season that includes the “best” 160th game in any Mets season, the “best” 161st game in any Mets season…and […]

How the Mets Got a Rainout

INT. CITI FIELD — NIGHT

Several dejected Mets are sitting around the clubhouse, half in and half out of their uniforms.

JUSTIN TURNER
God. We’ve lost four in a row, and the last three have absolutely sucked.

R.A. DICKEY
I know. Things were going sublimely in Cincinnati. I felt like we stood on […]

The Death of Maybes

Well, Emily and I had fun for eight innings.

It was a lovely night, we warmed up for the game with my wife’s first-ever visit to Donovan’s (I wouldn’t say it’s the best burger in New York City, but it’s very good — a bar burger executed perfectly), and during the mid innings I got to […]

Stay Albert Stay

Except for my standard-issue human blood and my mother’s accusations that I harbored “Bolshevik” sympathies as a nine-year-old McGovernite, you won’t find a drop of red in me. No Cardinal red, certainly. Ptui! on the 1985 Cardinals. Ptui! on the 1987 Cardinals. Ptui! on the Best Fans In Baseball. A Niagara Falls of loogies on […]

Standard September Mets Loss Blog Post

Expression of resigned exasperation with latest result.

Acknowledgement that result doesn’t matter at this stage of season, yet it is always frustrating to encounter this sort of result.

Link to article spelling out game details.

Snarky aside.

Key example of what went wrong in game.

Assertion of saving grace, focusing on how this was just one game and player who […]

A Dodger Among Us

Johan Santana has started 27 games this year. Here are the runs the Mets have scored for him in those 27 starts: 7, 2, 2, 5, 4, 5, 5, 1, 2, 6, 0, 1, 2, 7, 0, 0, 1, 3, 3, 4, 6, 7, 1, 1, 4, 3, 1.

Santana has won 10 games with an […]

Johan the Human Band-Aid

Nothing is wrong with the Mets’ world when Johan Santana is right.

There is no arrest.

There is no arraignment.

There is no civil suit.

There is no issue over who pitches the eighth.

There is no wondering who will pitch the ninth.

There is no pitch count.

There is no endless slump.

There is no idiot manager.

There is no inane remark about […]

Now THAT'S a Save

Francisco Rodriguez did not evoke visions of Neil Allen Saturday night. He was simply Francisco Rodriguez, the closer we hoped we’d be getting when he was signed in December 2008. Ever since trying his hardest to blow the final game in San Francisco, that’s pretty much been the K-Rod we’ve received.

The Mets’ 1-0 gem included […]

Rage, Rage Against the Dying of The Streak

Fourteen out of fifteen isn’t bad, and, considering from how far back we traveled to get as far as we did, 8-7 in 13 isn’t inexcusable.

But it still sucks to lose that way. Or lose at all. I hadn’t forgotten the feeling, no matter how unusual it had become to experience in 2010.

The Streak — the […]
