Help! I’m being held prisoner inside a Mets-Marlins series!
—Fortune cookie opened at Marlins Park this week, according to totally reputable urban legend

The Marlins were one of the two worst baseball teams playing at their eponymous park Wednesday afternoon. The Mets were the other one. Neither could be seriously described as the best of the pair. […]

A Less-Than-Impressive Milestone

Opening Day is, needless to say, the finest on the calendar. That’s true even if you’re a fan of a bad team, or one whose best-case scenario comes down to “can assemble some of the pieces required for a better future.”

The second game of the season, though, might be even nicer than Opening Day. The […]

More Accurate Than Blasphemous

And God said, Let the frozen waters from the heaven be melted unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

And God called the dry land Target Field; and the grouping together of the opponents he called Twins: and God saw that they weren’t so good.

And God said, Let Harvey bring […]

A Run for Each Degree

OK, not quite … but it sure felt that way.

I would love to get an up-close look at Target Field, which I’ve seen praised as a wonderful park and the anti-Citi for its generous portions of Twinsiana. And one day I will. But tonight I was happy to be 1,200 miles away huddled on a […]

Roy Story 2

The Mets taking it to Roy Halladay is a great thing. I’m not sure that’s who they beat up Monday night, however.

That couldn’t have been the Roy Halladay who gave the Mets and the rest of the National League fits in 2010 and 2011 after owning the American League for years prior. This was the […]

This Week in Buck Ball

It’s the golden hour for John Buck right now, that fleeting interregnum when the journeyman is master craftsman. It is a time to be savored.

John Buck drives in nine runs in five games, four of them in his fifth game to propel the Mets to a Saturday victory.

John Buck draws a roughing the catcher penalty […]

Three Days of the Cowgill

We may lose and we may win
But we will never be here again
So open up, I’m climbin’ in
—Glenn Frey, The Eagles

And I said to myself, this is the business we’ve chosen.
—Hyman Roth, The Godfather

If you told me I was going to three games in a four-day span in the middle of the season, I’d say, […]

Brian Schneider Finally Proves Useful

Pitchers are the early objects of attention and, potentially, affection at Spring Training. Catchers tag along dutifully. Yet it would be athletically incorrect to frame them that way, so we politely refer to this golden interval in the dead of winter as Pitchers & Catchers. Most years, it could be Pitchers & Pitchbacks for all […]

No, They Can't Take Those Away From Me

I’m happy on a Monday from attending two Mets-Marlins games Saturday and Sunday, I’m pretty sure, because the act of Mets baseball — seeking it out, absorbing it fully and wrapping up the leftovers to go — still fulfills me. The lousy record, the murky future, the uninspiring ownership and the dozens of obvious letdowns […]

The Sun Came Up Today

Neither the world nor the season ended just because the Mets forgot that they never lose on Opening Day/Night. Still, the whole John Fogerty “beat the drum, hold the phone, the sun came out today” sensation usually associated with the first game of the year grew rather hollow once I realized what I was waiting […]
