The Hitless Wonders of 2016

The Chicago White Sox were the sore thumb of my Logging for twenty seasons, ever since it was decided National League teams should play American League teams for something less than all the marbles. Whoever the junior circuit sent to Shea Stadium, I dutifully saw at least once, entering the encounter in the steno book […]

Keepsakes From a First Win

Nancy, who is originally from Long Beach, attended college at Stony Brook, where she roomed with Sue, who married Jeff, a D.C.-area standup comic and Mets fan who read a Mets blog enough to want to reach out to one of its co-authors, Greg…who is also originally from Long Beach. Jeff contacted Greg after Greg […]

HooK to MiddlebrooK, MatlacK to ByrdaK

It’s not as rare as Jason Bay homering in a Mets uniform, but we saw something else we don’t see very often as the Mets beat the Braves in Atlanta Monday night. And we saw it at the exact moment the Mets beat the Braves.

With two away in the bottom of the ninth, Tim Byrdak […]

Narrow Left Wing Conspiracy

Mike Pelfrey’s been re-signed, so that’s a load off our minds. If we didn’t have the tall wonder’s shortcomings on which to dwell, what starter’s lack of progress would obsess us ahead of Spring Training?

Jon Niese’s probably, which seems a little quick, considering he’s only 25 and has yet to make more than 30 starts […]

Horizontal Bop

It Was Benny Years Ago Today

There are three postseason games scheduled this October 7. By definition, they are all lacking a certain something. What is it? Oh right — us.

Once upon a time the Mets played postseason games on October 7. Once upon three times, actually…or thrice upon a time. However you measure it, let us recall the three best […]

Notes from Before the First No-Hitter in Mets History

This is no one-night stand
It’s a real occasion
Close your eyes and you’ll be there
It’s everything they say
The end of a perfect day
—Steely Dan

Ooh, wait! I’ve got another one! I know you guys are sick of me chiming in, but I can’t help it. Now that we’ve experienced the first no-hitter in Mets history and […]

Davis, Save Us

The Mets were meandering through their most arid major award season since 1993 — the last time no Met scored a single vote for MVP, Cy Young, Manager of the Year or Rookie of the Year nor nabbed a Silver Slugger or Gold Glove — when it appeared we’d have nothing more to sate our […]
