Thank You Sir May I Have Two More?

The Mets couldn’t win on the road.

Then they couldn’t win on the road unless they were playing the dregs of the junior circuit.

Then … then shut up already. Up in the Bronx (technically a road game) the Mets played with confidence and swagger and every other intangible you might want to believe in. And if […]

In Excelsis Reyo

At 9:25 tonight, with two outs in the top of the eighth, Ruben Tejada on first and the Mets hanging on to a rickety-looking 5-4 lead, Jose Reyes stepped to the plate against the Indians’ Chris Perez.

Reyes slashed Perez’s first pitch to right-center on a vicious arc, past the marvelously named Shin-Soo Choo. Normally I’m […]

Citi Field and Required HR Distance: A Scientific Inquiry by Three New York Mets

Between all-purpose busyness and an awesome, awesomely exhausting wedding in Braves country, I’d missed my Mets, whose recent admirable gaffing of Marlins had been relegated to condensed games peered at blearily on At Bat. So it was a relief to find myself pottering around my own kitchen with the Mets on at a normal time […]

The Beautiful Game

It was a canyon of zeroes along the top line of the Citi Field scoreboard these past three nights. Read ’em, per sweep:

000 000 000
000 000 000
000 000 000

That’s what your defending National League champion Phillies left behind, thank you very much. More to the point, that’s what your homestanding New York Mets […]

I've Looked at Mets from Both Sides Now

It was billed in some quarters as a battle of aces. Ours slipped out of the deck in the fourth inning. Theirs ran the table, collected the pot and was home in plenty of time for Cops.

So much for Pelfrey vs. Halladay. Just as well we still have Santana to deal as we await (and […]

Opportunity Pure, Simple and Cashed In

“Citi Field,” according to the 2010 Mets Media Guide, is “home to one of the longest ribbon boards in baseball.” That is most definitely not one of the Top 1,000 most interesting facts to be found in this otherwise indispensable publication. For that matter, the ribbon boards, when they’re flashing advertisements that have zero to […]

Reyes Über Alles

[T]he only name anyone sings in the Yorkshire ale houses, raising their stinking jars to their stinking mouths, is Brian Clough. Brian Clough über-fucking-alles! Understand?
—Brian Clough, The Damned United

I don’t know when it will be 2006 again for the Mets. I don’t know when we’ll have a regular season in which we praise our lads […]

The Glass Is Half Something

Watching Mike Pelfrey obliterate the Cubs and the Mets hitters do enough, I felt something I hadn’t felt since Opening Day. Or rather, I noted the absence of something.

Panic.

In 2009, a late two-run lead for the Mets was called foreshadowing. In the first week of the season it was a fantasy, as the Mets weren’t […]

Stupid Wins As Stupid Does

Tim McCarver called it a classic. The Baseball Tonight crawl called it a classic. Yet don’t mistake long for excellent. That was not a classic. It was certifiably long, the final result was immensely preferable to the alternative, and there were certainly aspects of it to like and even treasure, but that 20-inning Mets win […]

Spare Parts and Broken Hearts

“This is Country Time lemonade mix. There’s never been anything close to a lemon in it, I swear!”
—Kid from Shelbyville, “Lemon of Troy,” The Simpsons

Upset that the Mets don’t have a plan? Please. The Mets have never had anything close to a plan in them.

I swear.

It would be too easy to say “plan” is a […]
