The Abdominal Showman

He won 20 games, 19 of them after tearing an abdominal muscle in his second outing of the year. That he didn’t win a 21st in his last start doesn’t detract one iota from the season he crafted.

Will Cy Young voters hold it against R.A. Dickey that he couldn’t add one final win to his […]

The Last-Picked Mets

Adam Greenberg gets his second chance for a first impression tonight in Miami. The Marlins responded to his (and his filmmaker advocates’) “position wanted” campaign by saying, in essence, what the hell, it’s a great story, you’ve got a good cause, go put on a uniform, we’ll pinch-hit you in a game that doesn’t much […]

Down at the Sunset Grill

You see a lot more meanness in the city
It’s the kind that eats you up inside
Hard to come away with anything
That feels like dignity
Hard to get home with any pride
—Don Henley

The sun is setting on our boys of summer. They’ll be sending their best from Atlanta and Miami for the next six days, and I’ll […]

No, They Can't Take Those Away From Me

I’m happy on a Monday from attending two Mets-Marlins games Saturday and Sunday, I’m pretty sure, because the act of Mets baseball — seeking it out, absorbing it fully and wrapping up the leftovers to go — still fulfills me. The lousy record, the murky future, the uninspiring ownership and the dozens of obvious letdowns […]

Just When I Thought I Was Out...

…well, you know the rest of the line.

On Wednesday night I walked down the stairs through the rotunda, but before proceeding out of the gates with their NYs, I looked briefly behind me. I had two reasons for doing so.

1) I wanted to see what oversized faux-Topps baseball card they’d created for Matt Harvey. It looked […]

The Archetypal Game

Joshua was very excited about his first-ever night game, crafting a highly detailed case for why he ought to be able to have ice cream very late in the proceedings. I’d been harangued long enough to stop listening very attentively by then, but I believe the gist of it was ice cream in the eighth […]

Five Things to Make You Feel Better

So this simultaneously struck a chord and was no fun at all. What might improve things?

1) Make a date to see Knuckleball! It’s a terrific movie — a smart, sweet baseball valentine, and a wonderful character study of our own R.A. Dickey, Tim Wakefield and their forerunners as knuckleballers — Phil Niekro, Charlie Hough, Wilbur […]

A Real Sense of Purpose Now

If R.A. Dickey had counted on the Met offense to act as his Sherpas when he set out to climb Kilimanjaro, he’d still be at base camp.

Tuesday night’s foiled attempt at scaling Win No. 19 goes down instead as Loss No. 5 for Dickey, which isn’t out of line with the reality of the game […]

The R.A.refied Air of an 18th Win

Now he’s at 18. Now this is getting to be a whole other kind of fun.

Oh, it was good, clean, dry fun — no rain, please; it disturbs everything for which he stands — from early on this season. And it was a veritable overflowing fountain cup of fun in the middle of the year […]

Classy Pitcher 1, Team Tasteless 0

R.A. and Matt, three days of this ‘n’ that.

Not the most inspiring slogan, but we’re not the most inspiring team unless R.A. Dickey is continuing his magical season or Matt Harvey is launching his promising career.

Tonight it was the former, with Dickey his usual masterful self, supported by the enlivened bat of Ike Davis and […]
