Let's Spend The Night With Howie

LB looks better surrounded by and not submerged in water.

It was anything but a dark and stormy night the last time I was in my hometown of Long Beach, a place I’ve seen a lot of the last couple of days on TV as it’s become a body of water instead of merely […]

I Heard It Through the Metvine

Strange world we live in when the Mets game on what we used to call “free TV” isn’t readily available via the service millions pay for because…well, ya got me. Two corporations are in the middle of a pissing match and it’s the loyal customers who get spritzed.

So what else is new?

When I […]

Win a No-Hitter!

***WE HAVE OUR WINNERS. THANKS ALL FOR PLAYING.***

You haven’t lived until you’ve listened to the Spanish-language call of the ninth inning of the First No-Hitter in New York Mets History synced to the video. And if you’re wondering where you can do that, boy do we have a DVD for five of you!

Watch. […]

Rescue From Radio Nowhere

Monday night I did something I’m certain I hadn’t done since the twilight of Fran Healy. I turned down the sound on a Mets-generated telecast so I could listen to the game on radio. GKR heresy, I know, but I gave Gary, Keith & Ron part of the exhibition season opener off so I could […]

Gary Cohen Is On the Radio

With apologies to the late Warren Zevon:

Hurry home early, hurry on home
The Rays and the Rangers, and you’ll hear Gary Cohen

Fortunately, you don’t have to hurry home. At 2 o’clock Eastern, just flick on ESPN Radio (1050 AM in New York) wherever you happen to be. Or go to espnradio.com. Fire up the appropriate app. Hitch a […]

This Super Sunday Pittsburgh Lost

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1999
SHEA STADIUM
FLUSHING, NEW YORK

GARY COHEN

The last of the ninth inning in the final regular-season game of the year. The Mets and Pirates locked in a one-one duel. The Mets needing a win to guarantee there will be a tomorrow.

Greg Hansell, a well-traveled twenty-eight year-old righthander, will pitch the bottom of the ninth […]

Who's a Blum?

We should have known a Mets win was in the bag shortly after Geoff Blum spoiled R.A. Dickey’s bid for a second consecutive complete game victory with one out in the ninth inning. That may not have seemed like the moment for Mets fan self-confidence, but if I had done my homework, I might have […]

The Suffocating Insecurities of Mike Francesa

Pity Mike Francesa. He’s a very insecure man. Today he interviewed James Hirsch, the author of the wonderful Willie Mays: The Life, The Legend, and turned the conversation as well as the remainder of his show into a referendum (with his vote the only one that counts) on Mickey Mantle being better or more clutch […]

Rust Never Sleeps

While sitting here hopng the J-E-T-S will B-E-A-T the Chargers (and coming up with reasons to dislike the City of San Diego…stupid zoo), I’ve been kindly sent a link to a segment of vintage Art Rust, Jr. from 1981, at the beginning of his tenure on WABC. It’s a Spring Training show during which Art […]

Art On The Air

A winter’s night like this one? Twenty-five or so years ago? I would be dying for Mets news. I’d surely have checked my favorite blogs, except there were no blogs. I’d have watched MLB Network or SNY in hopes they had some information on their crawls, but there was neither an MLB nor an SNY. […]
