Past, Present and Future

Past

Here’s a sign of spring: The 2014 Topps cards are out.

Let’s not go overboard: This isn’t the greatest set. The photography’s good again, but Topps has developed an unfortunate predilection for novelty shots, with far too many players romping with teammates (and often on dreaded horizontal cards), getting doused with Gatorade or showing off Oscar […]

Time Is Sort Of On Our Side

’Twas four weeks before Christmas
When over by Shea
Chris Young had been hired
And promised he’d play

That was it for a spell
As signings would go
Talk had been active
But action was slow

The fans became restless
Wondering who’d be a Met
With checks to free agents
Not written yet

The club sent out e-mails
Wishing its very top tiding
While nurturing a roster
That wasn’t exciting

Eyes […]

Eight Points About Playing the Nats

1. When the Mets seem to have the game won but the Nats keep hanging around in the rearview mirror, you’re not being paranoid. They really are closer than they appear.

2. Particularly if it’s happening at Nationals Park.

3. I guess it’s nice that David Wright and Ryan Zimmerman are buds and all, but I hate […]

By Now He's an O.G.

That’s the way the baseball season works — you get snowed out in a somewhat farcical early-spring trip, the makeup date gets stuck on the calendar so far off that it might as well be science fiction, and then the makeup date comes around after all, leaving you mildly surprised to realize the season has […]

My Signature Citi Field Day, 2013

Prior to the All-Star Game, I heard and read that Citi Field was about to have its first “signature moment,” which I thought was a pretty misguided assessment, considering HELLO! NO-HITTER! on June 1, 2012. I’d also throw in a “hey” to that 20th win at the end of last year. I get what those takes […]

Little Mets Sunshine

Go figure. After somehow overcoming their own lack of hitting and boneheadedness afield to take two from the Yankees at Citi Field, the Mets made the very short trip north to resume hostilities in the Bronx with the likable but generally luckless Jeremy Hefner on the mound. So of course they leaped on David Phelps […]

A Real Cliffdweller

Well, that was inconclusive.

I would love to exult in a thrilling Mets victory or, barring that, dissect a frustrating Mets loss. Instead, let’s just all stare out the window and wait for 6:10 PM, for we have ourselves a suspended game, something I don’t know the Mets have had at home since Ed Kranepool couldn’t […]

As Perfect As It Needed To Be

Matt Harvey was not the only man in a Mets jersey to have the whole world in his back pocket Tuesday night.

It could have been more perfect, I guess. There could have been a little less hole for Alex Rios’s seventh-inning two-out grounder to edge into. Ruben Tejada could have been overcome by […]

Extended Spring Training Continues

Some positive developments for the Mets Saturday. Shaun Marcum got his throwing in, working his way up to 71 pitches. He only lasted four innings, but it’s not like anybody was counting. Then Terry Collins experimented a little and brought Robert Carson in for the fifth, which isn’t where you’d expect to see him, but […]

The Twinight Zone

Please come to Denver
With the snowfall…
—Dave Loggins

Submitted for your approval…nah, scratch that. Who here would approve of anything the Mets did Tuesday night in the city that’s been their personal Twilight Zone for two decades? Not fans of the Mets. Certainly not fans of crisp, clean baseball. Perhaps fans of the Rockies, but honestly, those […]
