Greg Prince discovered the Mets when he was 6, during the magical summer of 1969. He is a Long Island-based writer, editor and communications consultant. Contact him here.

Jason Fry is a Brooklyn writer whose first memories include his mom leaping up and down cheering for Rusty Staub. Check out his other writing here.

Morality Rehearsal

Well, anybody see that coming?

I just got back from three days in San Francisco (where I risked my college pals’ wrath during our annual get-together by riding shotgun on Johan’s no-hit bid, resulting in a curious ambivalence when Placido Polanco RUINED EVERYTHING) and tomorrow morning I’m heading out for six days in Orlando and Providence, […]

Now THAT'S a Save

Francisco Rodriguez did not evoke visions of Neil Allen Saturday night. He was simply Francisco Rodriguez, the closer we hoped we’d be getting when he was signed in December 2008. Ever since trying his hardest to blow the final game in San Francisco, that’s pretty much been the K-Rod we’ve received.

The Mets’ 1-0 gem included […]

And We Have Escaped Ourselves, at Least for Now

The good thing about 5-0 leads, besides the obvious Us > Them factor, is that it lets you screw up a fair amount and not have it be fatal. Which Jerry Manuel and Frankie Rodriguez promptly did, with a little help from Elmer Dessens. Elmer has somehow been fairly reliable, certainly reliable enough to be […]

Signs, Signs, Everywhere a Sign

GOOD SIGNS FROM THURSDAY NIGHT

• Johan Santana had the breaking pitch working, thereby forestalling by at least one start the precipitous decline feared on his behalf in this space five days earlier.

• Ruben Tejada displays incredible intelligence and instincts no matter where he plays. Whatever way you figure out to get Cliff Lee here, the […]

Best Infield Ever, the Home Version

Word is it was 99 in the shade at Citi Field Sunday, yet right here, it feels a bit like ’99 in the Shea: The Mets are hot on the Braves’ heels, Bobby Valentine is basking in the media’s glare and the Mets’ infield has been warming to its task with uncommon aplomb.

Highly uncommon, but […]

Two Hands One Year Later

Admit it. You’ve done it. You’ve done it out loud or you’ve done it in your mind. You’ve done it at everybody wearing a Mets uniform, and you’ve been doing it since a year ago Saturday night whenever the situation has called for it. You’ve done this:

“TWO HANDS! USE TWO HANDS!”

The Mets celebrated the first […]

Thanks Hanley!

Frankie Rodriguez made a good pitch. David Wright made a great pickup and throw. Ike Davis made a fine scoop. But Hanley Ramirez made everything easier on the Mets by taking his sweet time for the first third of his trip down the first base line.

We appreciate it, Hanley. We know you’re capable of doing […]

Mets Fans Not Getting It Done

You can’t take the numbers you see after five games terribly seriously. Do we really think Jeff Francoeur will hold to an on-base percentage of .500? That Ollie Perez will be hitting .500 all year? That Jose Reyes will be fielding .875 when all is said and done?

On the other hand, it would be hard, […]

Worse By One Third

After Sean Green — who elicited the first visceral couch-to-TV reaction of 2010: “Get Sean Green the fuck off my team!” — gave up the laser shot home run to Dan Uggla in the seventh, building the Marlin lead to 6-1, I filed Tuesday night’s game in that one third you’re going to lose, per […]

Our Immediate Prospects

I wish I could remember the young man’s name. I remember his age, 15. I met him last summer on an Amazin’ Tuesday at Two Boots. Big Mets fan, big fan of the blog, he said. Within a few minutes of introducing himself, he was excitedly explaining to me why the Mets would be in […]
