Quintana Gets Lost Again

I was looking forward to watching Jose Quintana pitch early this season, much as I looked forward to watching Shaun Marcum pitch early in 2013 and Carlos Carrasco pitch early in 2021, to name two offseason pickups who were waylaid en route to their Met debuts by Spring Training injuries. Quintana has a small stress […]

Mets of the 2010s: 90-81

Welcome to the second chapter of Faith and Fear’s countdown of The Top 100 Mets of the 2010s. An introduction to the series is available here; you can read the first installment here. These are the more or less best Mets we rooted for as Mets fans these past ten years. Since a decade is […]

Whose Game Was This Anyway?

I had hoped Tyler Pill might be Grover Powell. Grover Powell’s first major league start, for the Mets in 1963, was a complete game shutout, which didn’t happen for Mets rookies every day in 1963, nor, come to think of it, today. Before long, Tyler Pill 2017, who reacted well to the lights in Flushing […]

That Harvey

Throughout my childhood and into my adolescence, if I had to see the dentist, I was dragged from Long Beach to some deteriorating section of Brooklyn. We stayed loyal to our family dentist even though our family had left that deteriorating section of Brooklyn six months before I was born (later I’d find out that […]

Sometimes a Split Feels Fine

There ain’t much left to play for: A .500 season vanished from the realm of possibility with the afternoon’s listless defeat, and draft picks are too much of a crapshoot for me to take seriously.

But as is often the case, I think I’m moved on to acceptance. It was … kinda fun watching the Mets […]

Leaders of the Midnight Baseball League

Nine innings? Three hours and twenty-three minutes? What a gyp! What kind of Mets game is that in the middle of the night? Surely it was only the opener of a twidawn doubleheader. Surely they had to replay the sixth to the thirteenth from the night before in deference to Bruce Bochy attempting to make […]

For God's Sake, Shaun, Sit Down

May my blood stop running orange and blue if I can’t deliver unto you an assessment of Shaun Marcum’s pitching, so here goes, albeit borrowed from John Adams as he critiqued a portrait intended to preserve Benjamin Franklin for posterity in 1776:

“It stinks.”

As ever, the soul of tact.

This blogger may be no Botticelli, but the […]

Good Things

It’s summer. Basketball’s done. Hockey’s endless rounds of playoffs have ceased. Football training camps have not yet stirred. Baseball rules the land. And all is well.

Proof? Here are some good things for us all to appreciate:

1) Your 2013 New York Mets, even with Shaun Marcum.

Marcum hadn’t been great before tonight, but he hadn’t been 0-9 […]

The Ordeal Resumes

If Tuesday was the baseball equivalent of opening Christmas and Chanukah presents on the same bright December morning, Wednesday was the post-New Years night before you had to go back to school and realized you never touched the assigned reading you swore you were going to get to…and, oh, god, you have a paper due, […]

Met Games and I Can't Take It Anymore

“In my life, there’s been heartache and pain…” How ya doin’ out there, Mets fans?!

At Citi Field Friday night, Foreigner played “Urgent,” and Sandy Alderson woke up to contradict that characterization of the Mets’ situation, calling it “inaccurate…we’d say our plan is proceeding right on schedule.”

Foreigner played “Waiting For A Girl […]
