Mets Yearbook: 1973

There are two relief pitchers we’ve written about quite a bit in 2010. One is the incumbent closer, whose recent actions have gotten everybody’s attention. It also appears to have gotten him a torn ligament. Francisco Rodriguez, anger management candidate and apparent genius, messed up his right thumb while (allegedly) messing up his girlfriend’s father’s […]

Details, Details

You know exactly what happened between Frankie Rodriguez and his father-in-law…what exactly provoked the Mets’ closer into a situation from which he’s to be charged with third-degree assault?

Neither do I.

Thus, I’ll leave the amateur psychology to experts like SNY’s doctors of uneducated guessing and conjecture, Bobby Ojeda and Chris Carlin. Any event that involves the […]

Mets Yearbook: 1965

Time moves glacially between the last game before the All-Star break and the first game after it (a West Coast game, at that), but to make it through the final hours of the void, there is, thankfully, a time machine: Mets Yearbook. SNY is sprinkling in several greatest hits in the course of Thursday…

The Awesomeness of Ralph Kiner (Cont'd)

Two facts of life become apparent every summer in these parts:

1) New York is a humid place.

2) Ralph Kiner is an awesome man.

You know that incessantly run Heineken Light commercial, the one in which the young-ish guy explains how he and his pal Jamie won $94 million in the lottery and relocated to some slice […]

R.A. Dickey Is a Gunslinger

I got a story I really wanna tell
About R.A. Dickey at the O-K Corral
Now R.A. Dickey didn’t stand no mess
He wore a gun on his hip and a rose on his chest
R.A. Dickey’s a gunslinger (yeah, uh-huh, he must be)
R.A. Dickey’s a gunslinger (yeah, uh-huh, sho nuff)

Apologies to Bo Diddley, but too late: I […]

Mets Yearbook: 1978

You know what they say about taking lemons and making lemonade? Or whatever it is chickens leave behind and turning it into chicken salad? Well, I’m guessing you’ll know exactly what that’s all about tonight at 6:30 when SNY debuts Mets Yearbook: 1978, wherein a two-game improvement from 1977’s 64-98 disaster will likely be hailed […]

The Beautiful Game

It was a canyon of zeroes along the top line of the Citi Field scoreboard these past three nights. Read ’em, per sweep:

000 000 000
000 000 000
000 000 000

That’s what your defending National League champion Phillies left behind, thank you very much. More to the point, that’s what your homestanding New York Mets […]

Mets Yearbook: 1988

Set your DVRs or just get yourself glued to SNY Friday night at 7:00 for the debut of Mets Yearbook: 1988, the latest installment of the best series on television and the latest one we’ll see in chronological terms. Get ready to revisit the powerhouse Mets who were going to reign for years to come: […]

Spiteful Baseball Gods Can't Handle Great Broadcasting

I can’t get enough of Gary Cohen in the course of a game. Except for when I know he shouldn’t have just said what he just said.

Example one from Monday night: Oliver Perez is cruising along, as calm as the Ohio River. It’s the top of the fifth, game knotted at one. Ollie is being […]

Mets Yearbook: 1972

It’s Saturday night, 8 o’clock, the Mets game, unless it’s going 20 innings, is over. What’re ya gonna do now?

You’re gonna watch Mets Yearbook: 1972 on SNY, of course. Cool down from your Pelf-injected excitement (or cheer up from your Pelf-related depression…just covering the bases here) with a look at the season that started a […]
