Mets of the 2010s: 30-21

Welcome to the eighth chapter of Faith and Fear’s countdown of The Top 100 Mets of the 2010s. An introduction to the series is available here; you can read the most recent installment here. These are the more or less best Mets we rooted for as Mets fans these past ten years. Since a decade […]

This Is the Hardcover Edition

It’s the faces I’ll remember.

Steven Matz, hunkered down on the mound with his knees bent as Jorge Alfaro jogged around the bases, having authored a grand slam and a 6-0 Marlins lead. Matz’s face was a mask of horror and self-loathing, and for a moment I wondered if he’d be able to get back up.

Pete […]

The Whimper of the Normal

The ample lady of renown may not be singing quite yet, but I heard another singer last night. Not exactly a matinee idol, this one — he had a puffy face, jet-black hair, and big black-rimmed Coke-bottle glasses. But his voice was a rich burr that rose to an unearthly falsetto.

It’s over, it’s over, it’s […]

Lucy's Invitation

Ready to kick that football, Mets fans?

I’m not talking about the unasked-for arrival of a certain inferior sport before its time. Rather, I’m talking about Lucy Van Pelt and her ongoing invitation for Charlie Brown to kick the football she’s holding.

Lucy, you probably remember, invariably yanked the football away, causing poor Charlie Brown to let […]

Sometimes You Don't Know What to Think

How would you describe Friday night’s Mets game? Thrilling? Reaffirming? Anxious? Horrifying?

Maybe all of the above?

I spent most of the evening not knowing what to think, with good and bad arriving one after the other.

For openers, I wondered when I started trusting Steven Matz. Matz hasn’t had a bad outing in more than a month, […]

The ’05 Model

Congratulations, fellow Mets fans, we did it. We made it to September and we still have standings to pore over (don’t “pour” over them; they’ll just get wet). On Sunday morning, September 1, the 2019 Mets are four games removed from a playoff spot with four weeks to go in the regular season. It’s four […]

Burn After Losing

If MLB plans to sell gameworn home team apparel from this past weekend’s Mets-Braves series at Citi Field, it had better come in an urn. There should be nothing but ashes left from those ghastly ghostly getups that we never need see again. They weren’t pleasant to squint at as you tried to figure who […]

A Perfect Baseball Day?

1) Thanks to the kindness of an old friend, Greg, Emily and I got to see batting practice from the edge of the field. Michael Conforto is David Wright-level kind, signing anything and everything, posing for pictures and being supernaturally patient even when it might not be called for. (If you’re a major-league player who […]

Callaway's Calculations

If you’ve been reading us for the last two years (in which case thank you, by the way), you know that I think Mickey Callaway is a bit dim.

That said, I have sympathy for him right now. A fair amount of it, in fact.

He’s got a closer who can’t be relied on, a setup guy […]

Whatever Lies Ahead

Well, so much for the easy part.

Oh my God, Fry, couldn’t you go seven words without being a bringdown?

Honestly, I didn’t mean to do that. Let me zoom out a bit and try that again.

There have been a number of Mets seasons in which a cupcake part of the schedule has beckoned, suggesting a chance […]
