Playing for Sweeps

ESPN asked if the Mets and Nationals could come out and play Sunday night. Sure, they were told. But could they come out and play well? That was going to be more difficult on another Arctic evening in early April. Not that ESPN cared. They need product, […]

Follow the Sun

Back in the day, the Mets confined most of their April home games to afternoons. The thinking went something like this: it gets cold here at night. You might even say it gets bitter.

Thursday the Mets went back to the day, a scheduling decision we “20,561” on hand (an accurate figure if you count inner […]

Welcome to the Broom Town

Sweeping the Phillies in Philadelphia sure is fun, isn’t it? Sweeping anybody anywhere is a fine half-week’s work, but taking it to this bunch — the portion of it presently standing, at any rate — in that place?

That’s as close to flawless as they need to […]

Mets Sweep Florida Morons

This would be a good time to be a drive-time disc jockey in medium-sized city with a persecution complex. If I were, I’d be working under the radio name of Resentful in the Morning, and I’d stir up my listeners to join me in a natural disdain for our local baseball team’s archrivals, whom I […]

The Beautiful Game

It was a canyon of zeroes along the top line of the Citi Field scoreboard these past three nights. Read ’em, per sweep:

000 000 000
000 000 000
000 000 000

That’s what your defending National League champion Phillies left behind, thank you very much. More to the point, that’s what your homestanding New York Mets […]
